batch renaming features in MC?
« on: September 16, 2006, 01:42:03 am »

hi.
i'm currently re-organizing the classical music in MC, and it seems i will have to spend some time copying track #s or adding numeric values to the name field. (i won't go in detail or try to explain here.)
so now i wonder if there is way to batch rename in MC, like highlighting the tracks i want to change, and somehow write add "## - " in front of existing file name?
hope you got my meaning.
example: now three following rows may read - within the "name" column:
allegro
andanta assai
and i want them to read
01 - andante
02 - allegro
03 - andanta assai

There are lots and lots of batch field operation and file renaming tools in MC.  Try these out:

Select files --> Right Click --> Library Tools --> Rename Files from Properties (moves and renames files)
Select files --> Right Click --> Library Tools --> Move/Copy Fields (moves and copys data from one field into another)

yes, i'm aware of these (and i have used them quite frequently). still, what i was looking for, was a way to add info into already existing text, like in my example above. i want to keep the text andante, adagio, allegro, but find a function to add 01 - , 02 - , 03 - in the same field, so it makes a result like 01 - adagio etc.

thx,

Not quite

It appears you only want to prefix a Track# number to the name column ?

If so, the easiest way is to use a calculated field.

Go to Options->Library->Add

Call it Track # - Name and in the calculated data field add [Track #] - [Name]

Then add this Track# - Name field to your viewscheme.

You can always try an industrial-strength tool like Tag & Rename http://www.softpointer.com

The J River tools are fine for many jobs, but when you have some really big stuff to do, T&R really has the power.

thanks a lot. pretty close, but not exactly. the problem is, that the track # doesn't always equal the movement #. for instance, tracks 1-4 may be movement 1-4 of one work, while tracks 5-8 may be movement 1-4 of the next work. i suppose this feature may be limited to i.e. some photo editing programs, where one may mark some files and set the program to add numbers starting from 01  or 04 or whatever to the existing file names.

best of wishes,

You might be better off doing it manually then (editing the Name field) .

The number of tracks for a movement group will be different for each album right ? Some might take 4 tracks for 1 movement whilst others more or less. So a batch update might not be as easy as you think.

Unless :)

You make a separate custom field called Movement, add [Movement] to a viewscheme, populate it with the correct number, (MC makes it easy to fill many items with the same field).

then create a calculated field [Movement] - [Track] and add that to your viewscheme.

Without looking too closely at your task request, I would strongly recommend you take a look at King Sparta's "Replace Master", available in the plugin area.  I'm 99.9% sure you can do what you want in about 3 minutes for your entire library.

CAUTION:  this plugin is so powerful it would take about 3 seconds to ruin your data if you make hasty choices.

www.SpartaSoftware.com for my plug-in

for MC

Since MC does not have a append or Prepend option, you would need to use "rename files from properties" with rules like

[Track #] - [Artist] - [Album] - [Name]
