Ipod not reconized
« on: September 01, 2006, 08:45:37 am »

Got out my old generation 2 Ipod to change some files and MC will not recognize it. I get the following message:

Your Ipod could not be identified
Please check for an updated version of Media Center
Ipod type ,0,0

When I click OK, MC crashes.

I am using ver.  11.1.194. Is my Ipod too old to use with MC?

It's a problem with the 1st and 2nd gen firewire models and the new builds. It will be fixed in the next build probably later today.

I sank a month ago with the older version fine, but this AM I tried moving over additional files to  the ipod and nothing went through.  It would sync, and MC would show the songs as "On device" but nothing was there.

Just upgraded to the newest version hoping it would fix the problem of syncing but nothing showing on the Ipod.  Now, as soon as I plug in the Ipod to the USB I get a similar message stating it cannot recognize my ipod type: "1452,4611".

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, as of now -- I can't transfer a thing.

What model ipod is it??

Also, you didn't run a restore with the ipod updater on a Mac, did you??

It is a 20 Gig , Model A1059.

As for the "restore", I do not think I did that, but I'm not too technical (if you couldn't tell!!)

I just tried to initialize the ipod, that is it.

Would you copy the text from your sysinfo file on the ipod into a message here please??
It's under the drive it shows up as in explorer, then ipod_control/device.

It might be zero bytes. If it is just let us know. I think I know what is going on...

Unfortunately I am stuck in a bit of a loop here, I found that sysinfo file you mention, but when I try to open it it tries to open MC, but b/c my Ipod is on and hooked up, it immediately gives me the same error message saying it can't recognize my ipod type (1452,4611), and MC crashes.  The file name does include "Sysinfo, metadata handler 1KB" if that helps.  The ipod is not a photo ipod, just the plain old 20 gig music version.

I really appreciate all of your help on this -- I absolutely love MC, and don't want to go back to Itunes!!

We'll fix the recognition problem for sure. The next build will have a fix in it. It would be nice to get a copy of that sysinfo file though because it is the fallback method for determining which iPod you have. If you right-click on the sysinfo file and do open-with and choose notepad or choose program then notepad you'll see the text of the file. Then just cut and paste it into a message here...

Alternately you can just email me ( bob at jriver.com) and attach the sysinfo file...

Thanks!

Tried opening the sysinfo file w/ notepad and it cannot, saying the file or file path is corrupt.  The file also shows at 0KB at this point.    Would it help you out if I emailed it to you?  I'm happy to if so.

When would the "new build" be?

The fact that it's zero explains why the backup method didn't work, that's all we needed to know, thanks...

A new build should be out later today or Monday. Watch for an announcement at the top of the forum.

What is the status of this error?  I'm experiencing this error as well, and Mediacenter crashing imediately after it reports not recognizing my Ipod.  Mediacenter is reporting:  Ipod type  S492, 0, 0 .  I'm running build   11.1.196 of Mediacenter.

This would indicate that you are plugged in with firewire AND have a 0 byte sysinfo file. If that's incorrect, please post details like your ipod model number, interface (firerwire or usb) and the text of your sysinfo file.

Note that there is a BUG in the last iPod updater from Apple that zeros out the sysinfo file on restore. You can fix it by following this thread:

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=34597.0

Do not use the nano sysinfo file. Do use the previous updater to restore and then run a firmware update from the new updater if this is your problem.

I have the same problem while using firewire on my 20Gig iPod. I've tried both 196 and 198 builds, same result although with 196, the iPod type is reported as E435,0,0 and with 198 it is ,0,0 , i.e the E tag is gone.

I cannot find a sysinfo file on my iPod.

Hooked it up with USB and everything is working OK.

I have a 60Gb Photo Ipod.  Correct, I'm trying to use a firewire interface, though I have a USB cable I can use to work around this error.  My Sysinfo file is:
