OT: Good music newsletter?
« on: September 29, 2006, 11:19:25 pm »

This is somewhat of a long story.  Basically, I am not keeping myself up to date on the latest music and issues for artists.  Is there a newsletter or something like that I could subscribe to and receive via email for free which would provide simple new release information, latest artist news, etc.?  I only recently learned about a big issue from one of my favorite artists and it really bothered me how everyone else knew about the issue.  I quickly brought myself up to date with one Google & YouTube search, but I want something that prevents this from happening again.

I've looked at Rolling Stone but don't know if they have a good free newsletter.  It would ideally be a very detailed and graphical newsletter with lots of pictures and diagrams--I really like hearing about album sales, too (numbers).

www.icemagazine.com was the best one but i see there is a letter posted there stating that they are closing down, a real shame.

Not really sure of an online newsletter, but I generally use the following for finding new music...

www.metacritic.com - I find it to be a good source for reviews of new music, though this will partially depend on the music you listen to, since you will not find a lot of coverage for most Top 40 stuff.  It does have an schedule of upcoming releases.

http://www.pastecultureclub.com/ - I do not spend a lot of time on the Paste website but have subscribed to their magazine for quite some time.  Each issue comes with a CD sampler with 20 or so new songs and occassionally has a DVD sampler with music videos and short films.  I have found the CD samplers to be a wonderful source of new music (I have everyone of them ripped in MC and listen to them on a regular basis).  The magazine itself generally contains about 5-10 in depth articles and about 50 short album reviews each month.  Of course, this does not meet either of your criteria since it is neither online nor free :-)

http://www.allmusic.com/ will send an email of new music releases every Tuesday.

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/ has a decent newsfeed.

I use BMG a lot of my music and they are basically the same as allmusic so I bet they are quite similar in their newsletters.  I will check those suggestions out, thanks.

http://top40.about.com/ has a newsletter and an RSS feed.

About.com also has sites for specific genres. Check out http://about.com/entertainment/ for the full list, under "music" in the left coulumn.
