MPL export/import
« on: July 03, 2006, 09:57:41 am »

just got all my image files copied over to the test machine (gonna have to tag the tifs' from scratch though :()

You could import an old library (or perhaps only a subset that includes just the tif files) and put Otto to a real test. It should be able to fix the file locations.

Another option would be to beta test the mpl import. Gather the tif files to a playlist and export the list in mpl format. Change the base paths with a text editor if needed and try to import the file.

funny you should mention 'fix missing links', because it's on my list of things to do. (restore an old library on the test machine) none of the paths will be the same, but by and large, the files will be identical.

interesting idea re. mpl import. I might just give that a whirl, though to be honest, it's not something I've ever fully understood.

Alex, the mpl import did not go well at all.

1st attempt: find the file in explorer, used ultraedit's 'find and replace' to fix the paths, saved, right click, MC > import. zero files were imported (correct). zero files were updated (they should have been)

2nd attempt: drop the mpl onto the image node in the tree. Same results as above.

3rd attempt: delete the files from the library and try the mpl import again. Nothing. Remembers "don't import previously deleted files" goes and turns this off. Otto then beat me to it, leaving me in the same scenario as attempt one.

4th attempt: remove the directory from otto's control, delete the files again, import the mpl, again. again, zero files imported, but the tif files are mysteriously back in the library, minus any tagging info.

I'm not au-fait with mpl files and their importing, though I can see from the file what's supposed to happen. It's not happening.

The MPL import has never been able to update existing library files. Did you try with a new empty library?

IMHO, the MPL system should be developed further. It is the only way to merge separate libraries. At least it should work as before (I have not tested this yet).

An "update existing library files" option would make it much more usable. This should work quickly without checking the disk files. I have requested this a couple of times before.
