(running MJ Plus 8.0.356 on XP; ripped to MP3 VBR normal/high)

I recently ripped a few dozen CDs and have found serious problems with some tracks.

First: White Noise. Blasts of it, lasting up to 30 seconds long. Seems to be random; different tracks within sequences, different places on tracks.

Second: Clicks. Sounds like a click or a pop on an LP with a scratch. Happens every few seconds. All tracks on the given album  are affected.

This isn't happening on all tracks. I've randomly checked one or two tracks from each CD (totaling 500 files) ripped with MJ8 (and that's not all of the MJ8 files. I've got nearly 6,000 files on the computer going back thru MJ7, MusicMatch and Real.) I've found four instances of white noise; seven CDs with clicks.

It will take forever and a freaking day to check them all.

At first I thought it only happend to the the last one or two CDs in a ripping session of a dozen or so, but I found an exception to that.

Also, since this computer has been rock solid since installing XP, I have not shut down everything else when ripping (like I had to do with WinMe); could that be the problem? But why only on some tracks?

Anybody have any idea what could be going on?

I'm also getting the "white noise" issue.  Scared the #$%^ out of me when it played through the speakers.  It's totally random as to when it occursand seldom occurs.  I've never been able to pin down what causes it.  I was ripping from 5 drives and didn't pay much attention to what drive was the culprit.  One of the drives was a USB CD which is now disconnected.  Some times I was using the PC for other tasks when ripping so I just chalked the problem up to that.

I would usually just mark the file for deletion in the library and then rip it again later and it would be fine.

Well, now I suspect it's the DVD drive that I've been using for ripping.
I rarely just play a CD for listening. But I did this afternoon and got clicking and white noise. It comes and goes.
Still wonder whether other folks have had this problem.

David: Do you think it was the USB drive you disconnected? You seem to be saying the problem hasn't occurred since then.

Strange problem.  Someone (Shelly?) reported a problem that was fixed with a MS update.  Try IE/Tools/Windows Update and see what MS says about your system.

The odd thing is that it sounds like radio interferance.  Wireless gear?

That is strange. It sounds like the reading got out of sync somehow. If the read buffer was one byte off, it would produce white noise like that. I doubt it was an MJ problem, but I could be wrong. Sounds more like a CD hardware or driver problem, especially since it seems to be related to a particular drive on your system.

If you could reliably reproduce the problem, you could try different things to find the culprit, like ripping to wave instead of mp3, shutting down other tasks, updating cd driver software, etc.

Jim: Wireless gear is a possibility, but a remote one. I've got one of those Recoton/Advent 900mz transmitters on the desk, plugged into the sound card "out", but it's been there for a year with no problems until now.

John T: Drivers? Hmm. When I upgraded to XP (clean install) a couple of months ago, I did not install any Dell- or other manufacturer-specific drivers. I wanted to keep the computer as simple as possible (if it ain't broke don't fix it yadda yadda). I figured that when I needed the SB Live or Nvidia extras, I'd install them. Perhaps that time has come with the DVD drive, at least.
