Convince me that I need to upgrade to MC12
« on: November 03, 2006, 08:01:14 pm »

I currently own MC11, I simply use it as a music player. Do I really need MC12.
The MC12 forum does not give enough information to make the decision.

I simply need it for music playback. Is my MC11 fine?

Thanks,

MC12 plays music just as well as MC11.

If you only need it for playing music, why are you not using winamp, or musicmatch, or windows media player?

If you say why you chose to buy MC11 instead of using one of the myriad of other free music players out there, you might get a more comprehensive answer.

99% of my use of MC all the way thru to MC12 is for the playback and organization of my 40k+ music files.

Over the past several weeks as the bugs and GUI changes have been worked out and refined, I have been using MC11.1 less and less. A couple of days ago I realized I hadn't used used MC 11 for the last couple of weeks, so I finally uninstalled it yesterday.

Sure there are still a few things in MC12 I have issues with, but that was no different with MC 11 and actually with MC12 there are far fewer, (several of my wishes have come true with MC12).

The nice thing this time around is that you can have both 11 and 12 on your machine and make direct comparisons. Your MC11 license will allow you to install MC12 and try it (30 day trial) and purchase it at a discount off the retail price, you have nothing to lose to try it out.

Give it whirl! :)

If you only play a little music there is no compelling reason to use MC (11 or 12). On the other hand, if you have a large library of various media there is no other product on the market that comes close to MC.

Assuming you are happy with MC11 for music only, I personally don't think there is a compelleing reason to upgrade to MC12, although I did because I like to support the best software company on the planet.

I'm happy with this topic. I have upgraded all the time in the past. This time I was considering should I buy MC12 or wait for MC13 with new more visible features besides a new skin. All software companies bring out a new major version every year. Sometimes the difference isn't there.

Been using MC12 for 2 weeks and it feels and looks the same as MC11. Unfortunately a few problems I had with MC11 are still in MC12. If you use it as a music player there's no reason to buy or upgrade. You could also use Media Player for that, it's for free.

If you use a handheld or when you need more complicated features on libraries for instance stick with MC. I will upgrade, it's not much money and you have influence to newer versions. Having said this I will post some wishes.  ;D

Along th music lines, if you use an iPod, especially if you use any conversion of your music to load the ipod, you might want to switch for the cache capability.

I think MC12 is getting more polish and I would recommend you upgrade.  Do you NEED to....?  Is there a COMPELLING reason....?  No, but as others have said it gets to why you chose MC in the first place.

The reasons why I bought MC12 are:

1. Noire skin.  It's soooo cool.  I love transparent mini view.
2. iPod cache.  I didn't want to convert all ape files into ac3
3. I likes cue file support by APE.   ::)

Automatic import and updating of your music library.

Better tagging (even a bit more 'standard' compliant).

Smoother operation, less time waiting on building playlist/displays, much better at restoring from minimized state.

You may find that the greatly enhanced image handling will entice you to start using MC for them as well.

It's new! What more reason could be needed!?

In all, a nice upgrade.

What does it cost to try for 30 days ?

11.1 is faster i think since they have thrown in all the optimisations, 11.1 will also be more stable as its finished.

If 11.1 is the first version of MC you have tried, then stick with it and take the time from now till 12 becomes final (sometimes around july next yr) to learn in a more stable environment. You can jump in on the betas the year after...

If 11.1 does not do all you want, then you have to try 12 and see whether it fits the bill. You stand a better chance of getting requests implemented in 12.

If you have to be convinced, it probably does not matter which version you are on.

I would suggest trying it.  If you still need convincing after the trial expires, stay on MC11.

MC 12 is much faster than 11.1.  It is also stable enough particularly for Audio.  The tree view allthough still not perfect, is much better now such that I actually use it. :)

MC 12 is much faster than 11.1.
I find tag edits in action window & PN more sluggish in 12.0 (12.0.106) than in 11.1, also No tags are being written to the files at all, just the library. The visible fields are set not to store tags in the files. I just imported the 11.1 lib into 12.0 and these settings were all inherited.

..not that 12.0 won't be as fast when they pull out the stops as they do near the end.

The reasons I buy MC in the first place are:
0- I'm one of the dude for who his computer is the main component in his home theater.
My computer (Sound card Creative x-fi Elite pro) is currently connected digitally to my Pre/Pro(Arcam AVP 700 + Aragon 2000+2005 amps + Klipsch Rx7 speaker package) for movies sound processing an 2-channel playback, as well as analogly for DVD-A and 2-ch playback.

1- I wanted a player fully integrated with all the necessary audio plugins.
Specially, the ASIO playback support was a most for me in order to bypass the Windows kmixer.

2- I have a library of 250GB of audio files (APE, WAV, FLAC). A library of 300GB of HD movies, I was looking for a player capable of not only managing these files but also can play them well. MC video (DVD, HD file) playback is not the best, I use other software (ZoomPlayer + FFDshow) for that.

Those who suggest Winamp, Windows media player are probably not using their computer to the scale I am for audio/video processing. Yes, I could have use winamp, but I don't like the fact that I need to search all over the place to find the right plugins for it.

So when you said

"currently own MC11, I simply use it as a music player"

you were basically talkin' shite.

Buy it because it looks much nicer, and if you want to stay in touch with any exciting new developments in the MC sphere, they will not be happening to MC11.

Oh...and you seem like the sort of person who appreciates fine quality stuff...

With windows Vista around the corner, and with the current price of dual processor.
I expected to see
- both a 32-bit and 64-bit version of MC12
- Optimized for dual processor.
- Native FLAC support

Actually I Don't See That Happening.

64bit Compiler Is Only Avail On The Most Expensive Programing Suits From Microsoft, And Since Vista Is A Moving Target At This Point I Would Think Many Upgrades To The 64Bit Encoding Can Be Expected.

Personally, I will be sticking to MC 11.1 for now.

MC 12 looks very promising (I love the new theme, tagging is better, and video playback is more user friendly), but when I tried it - it hogged much more of my CPU than MC 11.1.

To be fair, MC12 is still in beta, and the MC team is very good/fast at fixing bugs/errors.

Again, MC 11.1 does everything I need for now.  If I notice MC 12 is doing more stuff that I could use, I will upgrade (video conversion, easier music transfers/with rockbox, more user friendly – I do not even think I half of the features in 11.1).  But for now I am going to hold on to my money, until I see more development in MC 12 or possibly even MC 13.

Furthermore, I agree with the above…  MC has been the best so far in terms of stability and speed with large media collections.  I believe the developers and users are more technically involved and thus can appreciate the software more than an average user.  I  also do believe that with the recent changes in MC 12, this gap is narrowing.  I am  looking forward to see what the MC crew has in store for us!
