iTunes 7.0.2.16 / iPod Updater
« on: November 15, 2006, 01:18:02 pm »

I don't know when it came out, but iTunes has been updated again.

As there is no longer a separate iPod Updater - I checked it out.  At least with a 5th generation iPod, there are no software updates.  Software version 1.2 is still the latest.

But - it took about an 1 1/2 hours to verify this (download - change start up options so it does not overly control the PC, it rebuilds the iPod database, gapless stuff ...).

If anyone hears about a separate updater again, let us know.  Otherwise we are stuck with this approach from Apple.  BTW - I did try to contact them directly, but they do not respond.  I think they care about their customers - but not that much.

this is why I'm still on ipod version 1.1.2, and as far as I can tell, my ipod is not broken, so I don't need to fix it, do I?

If your not having any problems, then there is no need to update it.  I just get a bit compulsive about staying current.

While I really preferred the standalone updater, you can keep iTunes installed and just not use it.  You will still have to reset some things when you download a new version, but it's less of an issue then doing a fresh install.

My opinion is that Apple is trying to force people to have iTunes installed.  That way they can sell them music, which where where the real money is.  My guess is that they make little or no money on the actual hardware.
