hi

i am using MC 12.0.106 in parallels (mac virtual PC software) on a macbook pro, and i am having trouble importing tracks with a square bracket in the filename/title of the track.  i am getting a failed to import message.  the drive that i am importing on is on a network and is a FAT32 drive.  i am not sure if this is an issue to do with MC12 or networking/parallels.  could someone please advise

it is not a legal Windows OS File Name

I have seen a square in a file name before and it will not work on a ftp server.

I did a search and aparently there are other programs that have a problem with a square in the file name.

i think windows thinks it is a line feed or something

For example,  [Yes, it is legal].fyi  is a legal filename.

However, the network client & PC emulator combo or the used network server SW may convert square brackets to something illegal. Do you have a Windows server or something else?

Can you see the file in Drives & Devices (inside MC)? If yes, what is the displayed filename?
What happens if you try to drag such a file to Playing Now from Windows Explorer? Can you play it?
Can you import the file from your local Windows partition?

it could be something microsoft does not understand so it may just look like a square. i seen a matrix that had some of the chrs looking as a square, there was more than one.

The combination of "a standard Windows 2000/XP network server PC", "a standard Windows 2000/XP network client PC" and "MC on this client PC" works fine with filenames with square brackets.

Obviously something is changing the name in nick_harambee's setup.

Personally I tend to simplify the filenames on the disk and use only common characters and relatively short names. I keep anything unusual in the file and library tags only. From time to time I need to use my files outside the Windows environment.

For example, I use a Mac HFS+ formatted external Firewire drive for transferring big captured DV video files between PCs and Macs. On PC I use MacDrive for accessing the drive. This program does usually good job in translating the filenames, but sometimes it cannot copy a file before I change the Windows filename. The last time this happened was when I had a couple of quite long filenames and the only difference was in the last character before the filename extension. I had to change the beginning of the name to make the program understand that the files had different names.

the files show in windows explorer, but don't show under drives and devices in MC.  i cant import/drag and drop from windows explorer

You are talking about a different thing, King. He doesn't mean the square that shows an invalid character, he means [ and ], which are called square brackets and are completely valid in filenames. The use of them is very common in ripped MP3's, so called "original relases", I have heard from a naughty uncle who downloads stuff like that...

Has the problem with multiple dots (Full-stops) in the name from MC 11 been resolved?
Considering a purchase, but I've got somewhere in the reigon of 15k files which have multiple dots in the filename. I'm assuming that MC assumed them to be additional extensions & threw a fit.

Have a look at my thread a little further down. Seems only to apply to some filetypes, but no resolution ATM.
MP3's & AACs are working, but DIVX & Real Media aren't.

MC is handling flac files with [square brackets] in the filenames perfectly fine here.

Perhaps there is something else at play in your case?

Tested on this machine & they're not 
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all the filetypes mentioned in this thread going through FFDShow filters? I know there's not a driver as such, but maybe this has something to with the filter version installed or something?

what else is at play is that i am importing via parallels desktop (virtual pc software) over a network in mac osx.  MC12 imports square brackets fine directly into windows.  i only had 100 files with square brackets so i have altered the filenames to normal brackets and they have imported fine,

There are (or were) some issues with characters not being recognized during the import of the file.  After I switched over to using the Reader as opposed to the File version, this should have been fixed.

But the fact that it's running on the Mac makes it more difficult
