iPod is brand new. I'm using MC 12.0.116 Beta, and keep getting this message:

Try running updating your iPod.

The iPod has software version 1.2 - and says it doesn't need to be updated. I tried to "Restore" - and then initialize in MC12, but I'm still getting the same message in MC12.

The message appears once, and if I cancel that message, it appears a second time. After that, MC12 recognizes that there is an iPod attached, and I can even send music to it, but when I try to play that music nothing happens. Also, I've found that if I go back to the latest MC11, there is no issue with MC recognizing the iPod. (I'm hoping not to do that bcs. I've spent a lot of time fixing tags/assigning cover art in MC12.)

The second part of your problem, where you send music to the iPod but it does not play.  I have the same issue with 12.0.116, but if I drop back to 12.0.115 it plays OK.

i also have an external hard drive (with music on it) plugged into another USB port - that's it.

I think MC is picking up the external drive as a possible iPod because it has the folder 'iPod_Control' at the root. We've added some code in the next build to be a bit more selective in determining if something is a possible iPod or is just posing as one. Please try again with tonights build and let us know how it goes.

As for the files not playing, we're still working on that...

I downloaded the latest build of MC12, kept the power to the external drive off, and connected the iPod and voila - it recognizes it - no error.

However, when I turned on the external drive - I received that same "Your iPod Could not be Properly Identified" message. (I don't think that my external drive has any iPod-related files on it - it simply has .ape files and that's it.)

Also, if I have the external drive on first and open MC - no problem. But then when I attach the iPod, I get the same message.

The good news is that after selecting "OK" in those error messages, I can upload music, and the music plays on the iPod.

Two other things:

I just transferred ~ 100 songs to the iPod, and about halfway through the transfer, the message popped up again. (Again, I selected "OK" and the transfer resumed.)

Also, while the full song length transfers to the iPod, when playing, once the song has :10 seconds remaining it cuts and moves on to the next song.

Build 12.0.118 should eliminate the bogus iPod problem you're having.

As for the truncating problem, are the files mp3's and do they have potentially bad gapless information. To view the gapless information go to the Tag Action Window and click on 'Format'.

The format of my music files on my PC is .ape. When I transfer to the iPod, the settings are:
Convert to .mp3 Encoder (Custom > lame.exe --preset fast standard).

When I look at the "Format" tag for files on the iPod, I see "178kbps - Unknown compression audio not analyzed." If I click on that I see a setting that says "Gapless: Yes"

I've never set anything in MC to be gapless (I'm not even sure if you can set .ape files to be gapless?)

The issue is only with files that are on the iPod itself, and I'm not sure how I could send you that specific file from the iPod?

Could this have something to do with the conversion from APE to MP3?

In the interest of providing as much info as possible, it might be worth noting that if I play the iPod tracks in MC12.0.120 - the songs play until the end before switching; it is only once the iPod is disconnected that the end of songs get cut off.

It happens for all files, but I'll just pick one:

Artist: Beatles
Album: A Hard Day's Night
Song: A Hard Day's Night
(Duration 2:32)

So if I look at the "Format" Tag, I see:
175 kbps - VBR (MPEG-1 Layer 3)
134 bpm - 5 intensity - 14.21dB - 92%

Then if I drill into that tag, I get:
MPEG-1 Layer 3
175 kbit VBR
44.1 khz Joint Stereo

So there is no choice to have standard gaps between songs on an iPod? (To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure if it is only the silence that is cut off - I'll have to listen a little closer this weekend - but I know that it sometimes cuts more than 6 seconds.)

Also, If I connect the iPod in MC12, and play the iPod songs within the MC interface, there is no gap - only if it's disconnected.

Another thing that I just noticed is that the song lengths on the iPod (MP3 files) are different than the duration of the songs that are in my MC library (APE files).

The duration of almost every song on the iPod is one second longer than the duration listed in MC.

With both iPods, I've run into trouble -- including this exact error with my new iPod -- until I've gone into My Computer > Manage > Drives and assigned to my devices consistent drive letters outside of the normal drive range. I tried assigning B: to this new one, but it wouldn't work until I reassigned it to H: -- and then it worked with no problem. (My other one was already assigned to I:)

Without a proper drive letter assignment, I couldn't get either iPod to show up in either MC or iTunes, even though it showed up in Windows.
