Search/View scheme question
« on: November 22, 2006, 10:25:21 am »

Don't know if this is "as designed," but...in MC 10 i used to be able to drill down my default "Audio" view scheme (Artist-grouped, Artist, let's say) and then go up to the search field and enter text to search *within* the Artist just selected in the View scheme.

In MC12, (118) after i select the Artist in the view scheme, if i start typing in the Search field, the view scheme reverts to "All" across the board.  Seems like a strange assumption to make...is that by design?  Is it changeable?
thanks,
steve

It was changed, much to my chagrin.   >:(

One of my only complaints in MC.  You can't use the search as a filter within a 'browsing session'.

Exacerbating issue is the 'Playing Now' functionality since if you were to drill down into your library and  realized you wanted to add a filter such as "limit 2 songs per artist' you wouldn't want to do this with the current search functionality and so then after sending your results to 'playing now', how would you go about applying the the 'limit 2 songs per artist' rule?

You can't, because it simply filters the results but does not update the order of playing now by removing the results.  I have never liked this.

Basically the search box forces you to know exactly how you want to browse before you do it.  I don't think like that, and I would gather that most users don't either.

I wholeheartedly agree.

I understand that the current philosophy is that it's like reading, ie., start at the top and work down from there.

I always preferred being able to filter down via panes, and then add a final fine-tune by way of the search box.

Thanks all,

It is annoying, but seeing marko's explanation helps:  i guess i understand the principle too...if i can retrain myself, i'm sure i'll get used to it.

I have not.  It's not that big of a deal, but deffinetly gets annoying when you have to start browsing again.

A couple  of solutions would be to have the default search functionality as it is, but add in a check box in the options menu that allows for the old way of searching.

OR

Add in search boxes to each view header.

I think I already know the answer, but I'll throw it out anyway just to make sure.

It is not possible to search on a single field like artist or album?

when using [Artist]=[bla bla bla] I cannot use wildcards?

Yes.

Use:

[Artist]=bla bla bla

Again though on this thread, I hope JRiver looks at the principal issue at hand, above.

The problem I have with Search in Theater View is tha I can only do a search for songs. If I have Artist selected, and want to search for an Artist, the song list appears and the keyboard entries filters only the songs. Am I doing something wrong, or is this the way the filter is designed to work.

What I thought it was going to do was to filter the selected catagory i.e. when viewing Artist I could search for Artist, when viewing Albums, I could search for albums, and so on.
