DFX Version 8.019 with MC 12
« on: November 22, 2006, 05:05:13 pm »

It does not work for me.  Even though I'm a paid up licensed user for DFX Plus I've given up on this software.

I think the sound is good - but at least for me it skips and slows down my visualizations, etc.  If anyone has any configuration tips, I'll try them - other than that I give up.  I just think a 3.2ghz PC w/1gb of memory should be able to play a MP3 file without this much trouble.

I'm not saying you should not consider this software, but I would suggest trying the free download first just to make sure it works OK for you.   I should have done that myself.

Randy,

DFX 7.2 works perfectly well here with MC.12

Do you really need the new features of version 8.019? Perhaps you could stick with 7.2...

I'll give it a try.  A working 7 is better than a skipping 8.

Thanks...

Deivit,

I'm trying version 7.  I could not download v7.2, but they did have v7.3 available.  I could not use my v8 license, but I will sort that out later if this really works.

I also got contacted by their support group.  With the holidays and weekend, I don't expect them to get back to me again until next week.

Randy,

I think I have a copy of V.7.2. Let me know if you need it.

I Have Not Used DFX For Many Years

DFX Older Versions Are Located Here

Thanks KingSparta,

That's where I looked.  The version 7 that they have there is the latest 7 (e.g. 7.3).  They don't have earlier versions of 7 there, but that's OK.  7.3 may work.

Deivit,

Thanks for the offer.  I'll try 7.3 for now & see if that helps.  Also, their support group is looking at it, maybe they will have a suggestion that will make v8 work.

BTW - I've been monitoring the CPU usage.  It looks like the skipping occurs when there is a CPU usage spike.  I don't know if DFX is creating the spike or if it is just intolerant of it.

Deivit,

I'm still getting some skipping with v7.

Could you tell me how you have your system configured?  What Output Mode are you using (Wave Out, Direct Sound, ...)?  Also, how large is your buffering?

Thanks...

Randy,

I have my playback configured with output mode: Direct Sound, default channels, with a 0.50 seconds buffering. Hope it helps.

Are you doing other tasks when the skipping occurs? CPU intensive tasks such as ripping CD's? Your system is better (more powerful) than mine. It should work. Did it work fine with MC.11 and not with MC.12?

Deivit,

As I've had trouble with both v7 & v8, I'll do more testing based on v8.

I'm matching the settings you have to see if that helps.  I had it set to Wave Out.  Maybe Direct Sound will work better for me.

I did try setting the buffer to 5 seconds and it appeared to be fine.  In my prior testing I had only increased it to 2 seconds before I gave up on that as a solution.  I have no idea why it would require a 5 second buffer.

I never had it installed with MC11.

I'm not doing any CPU intensive tasks.  At most I'll do a little on the internet.  Simple stuff, like this forum.

Deivit,

There is a country western song by Alan Jackson that sums up my situation.

Everything I love is killin' me
Cigarettes, Jack Danials, and Caffeine...

With DFX I appear to be suffering from the same, but it's coming together.  The skipping usually occurs when there is a short CPU spike.  This appears to be a result of a combination of things (Everything I Love).

1) I'm using G-Force & SoftSkies.  These take a bit more CPU then other visualizations.
2) I'm using Firefox, which appears to take a bit more CPU than IE (this may because of the add-ons)
3) I found I have a very resource intensive spyware program (Spy Sweeper) which causes a short but large CPU spike every 5 minutes or so.

So I killed the spyware program.  Most of the skipping issues went away.

If I just play music, it's fine.  This is regardless of the visualization.
If I use simple visualization I can use Firefox to browse (it's only certain sites, like eBay, that really take more CPU)
If I browse with Firefox and use resource intensive visualization, I will get skipping every now and again.

At this point I can probably fix it by increasing the buffer or live with it.  It's really the combinations that set it off.

Thanks for your help.
