iPod sync issues
« on: November 27, 2006, 09:17:44 pm »

I've got several iPod sync issues with MC 12.0.118, on Windows Vista RTM with my iPod Nano (v 1.3).

* Podcasts are marked as not listened on the iPod every time I sync.  This is really frustrating, as I lose my place in the podcast.  Could it have anything to do with the Get play stats from handheld on connect option?
* Certain files are synchronized over and over even though they're already on the device.  For example, one file from a podcast is already on the device and it comes up with a "File missing" error even though the file isn't missing.

MC11 won't recognize my iPod on Vista, so I can't go back to the older version.  Are the above known issues that are being worked on, or can I work around them now?

Thanks in advance.

One more issue - my iPod doesn't remember playback position on some podcasts.  I *think* this is file specific.  In other words, MC needs to mark the file in some fashion so that it's bookmarkable.  Any ideas?

Thanks again.

Are podcasts bookmarkable?  I thought they were just mp3 or m4a files, and I didn't think that either of these was bookmarkable.  I can say that I've never had a bookmarkable podcast on my iPod, but this of course doesn't mean that it's not possible if it's file specific.

Larry,

Maybe bookmarkable isn't the right word.  When I exit a podcast to go listen to something else, the iPod remembers where I left off in the podcast.  Or at least it used to under MC11 on Windows XP.  My Nano doesn't do that any more.  I *think* Podcasts have to be marked by the sync software in some fashion for this to work, but I could be wrong.

I'm going to go back to synching my iPod with MC11 on XP, as MC12 on Vista RTM just isn't working well enough for me yet.  Not sure if this an MC12 issue or a Vista issue, but it's frustrating either way.

You're definitely using the right word -- I just haven't ever experienced a bookmarkable Podcast on my iPod (5G) OR in MC, including both 11.1 and 12.  The only bookmarkable files that I have personally experienced have been Audible (aa) files, and these worked both on the iPod and in MC.

Larry,

Strange - this absolutely worked for me in every case with MC11.1 and my iPod Nano 1G with firmware 1.2.  I listen to about a half dozen podcasts regularly and I manually downloaded a bunch, all of which remembered where I left off.

One thing to note - if I use the iPod select button to play, it would start the podcast from the beginning.  If I used the Play button it would remember where I left off.

For what it's worth, I synched my iPod using MC11 on XP and the iPod now bookmarks files the way it used to.  This is either an MC12 or MC12 on Vista issue.

It must be file specific in that case.  I've tried both mp3 and m4a podcasts, and none of them has ever provided bookmarks on either the iPod or in MC, and this includes MC11.1.
