John, I did another FAQ entry but I don't think I have the ability to delete the old page. At least I couldn't find a way. Can you please delete the orphan page "Install problems"?  Make sure you pick the one with the lowercase "problems".

This post is endanger of disappearing in to the depths of the board.
Maybe it would be a good idea to place a link to it from
the top of the forum board
where it has links for
"MC Home| Skins & Plugins| MC Dev Zone| MJ Home| Purchase Media Center| Company"

I have to agree. This needs to be a sticky like it was. Trying to find that link among all those FAQ items is difficult, especially since the FAQ items are supposed to be moved to the Wiki.

Speaking of Wiki, can someone with authority please delete the Cover Art for MC11.1 page since I have moved it elsewhere?

And is the best way to request a page deletion?

I just added a page in the wiki for managing DVD library and how to view extracted DVDs on network computers.

http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/DVD_Library_in_Media_Center

It is only half done. Please edit it for corrections/insertions.

There is a link to it in the FAQ.

I just think having it in the links section would make so many more people use it,
and contribute to it.
Many projects have a wiki link sort of straight from there front page now.
FAQ's are something no one ever reads.  I know I never do,
and as dcwebman points out the FAQ should become part of the wiki
not vice versa.

FAQ's are something no one ever reads.  I know I never do,
It's pretty hard to build a workable system when nobody reads.

When the Wiki gets more up to date, we'll add a link somewhere.

The wiki is still a beta. There's a couple of thresholds to be crossed before it will be ready to be more prominent.
The best way for that to happen is to use it in responses here in Interact (both as a pointer to the answer, and adding the information found here to the wiki).

OK, guess we'll just have to keep finding this topic whenever we need to discuss something about the Wiki instead of having it be a sticky topic.

Wiki Admins, please delete the following pages:

I'll also suggest the main page discussion area as a good place to talk about the wiki in general...

Search in Wiki seems busted or limited somehow. For example, I tried searching for three different terms: DVD, CD and CD rip.  All of them displayed 0 results. Any idea why?

thanks,

Yes, I do, but haven't had time to try to fix it yet. The wiki only searches for longer words (4 letters or more?), and doesn't give a reasonable error message when the search string contains only shorter words.

Hi J River,

Have a look at this Wiki. It's a very nice representation of the documentation:

http://www.snom.com/wiki/index.php/Snom300

This could be even called like that from the Help Menu!

Thanks Jaguu - it is a nice looking site. I've put the link on our Community Portal page:

http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/JRiverWiki:Community_Portal

where we figure out how to improve the wiki.  All are welcome to stop by and comment...

Since I consider myself a power user or at least an experienced one, I would find the wiki useful in providing concise but fully covered topics.  Duh, right?

The forums when searching for a specific topic often times are very fragmented and either don't discuss much of what you were hoping to find or if it does, you have to piece it together unless you luck upon a user who happened to do this for you in a single post.

I think the search function will be the best navigation for me.  I think a great idea would be to somehow find an easier way to have certain forum topics morph into wiki articles, a way to bring the cream to the crop so to speak.  Ultimately it comes down to the quality of the info written rather than the organization of it in my opinion, allthough if you don't know what to look for then that does help.

Maybe add some sort of function to the forum that takes the topic at hand and automatically searches for it in the wiki and then suggests where it might best fit if it were to be added?  Maybe have some sort of a 'usefulness' post rating?

I think adding screen shots and a written description of the screen shot would be useful.

@datdude

Ultimately, I think what you are referring to requires a major modification of YABB to provide (to use Microsoft-ish or Novell-ish) "This solves my problem" code, and also the WIKI code to auto-enter the forum solution to problem 'xyz' into the wiki. While not denying the usefulness of your suggestion, the practicality of the suggestion is an issue.

If the forum had a "This solves my problem" option, then it would be halfway there. However, given the lack of support by the forum software to do so, and the (and I may be uniformed here) lack of the support of the wiki application to accept such an entry, it would require a lot of manual filtering by JR to make the system work.

At the end of the day, unfortunately, these issues are most likely prohibitive (without significant amounts of user interaction) to the solution that you suggest, especially given the fact that a topic often doesn't  reveal its true nature until about the 3rd reply by the original poster as to their precise problem, and then 20 replys to said problem of which the 3rd or the 7th may the the one that "This solves my problem".

Once again I don't deny the usefulness of your suggestion, just it's practicality (personally, I would like to see it also).

Cheers,
C.

Most of the great user posts you're referring to are listed in the FAQ.  At least, I always try to put the ones I see there.

The good thing about the wiki is anybody can edit it. If you don't think you have the ability to edit it to enter a concise forum post solution, then simply add the forum post URL to the To Do list in the wiki and hopefully someone else will make the effort.
