Matroska files
« on: November 01, 2006, 03:40:56 am »

Some time ago Alex I think it was sold the idea of Matroska files to me,
and at the time they were not supported.
I see that the extension is now available, in the list of files, to open.
So just wondering...
1. Can MC open the files ok? Presumably this is using DirectShow...
2. Can MC write tags to these files?
3. Is there a way(not in MC) to convert my AVI's to Matroska?

Cheers
Chris.

Not sure if it was me :)

1. DirectShow is correct. MC uses it and from MC's point of view Matroska and AVI are not different from each other.

2. No, MC would need to have new internal code for tagging Matroska files. As far as I know only WMV video files can be tagged with MC. WMA audio and WMV video use the same tag format.

3. You can take the video and audio streams from AVI (AVI is a container format too) and wrap them into Matroska, but that would probably not make any difference in MC. It would be beneficial only with programs that can use Matroska's extended features. Check the Matroska site out for more info.

OK Presumably that means it can't read the tags either?
So for the moment, converting the files in to MKV's, tagging them
in something else, and reimporting them into MC would be a waste of
time also...
Hmmm....
Thats a shame.
*Chris sits and twiddles his fingers waiting for MC with full Matroska support*

The easiest application to use to convert AVIs to MKVs is MKVtoolnix.  It's available here: http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/
