Bug - time estimates WAY off for handheld transfer
« on: January 03, 2007, 07:45:25 am »

I just started transferring some files to my WM5 device.  When I started the sync, it almost immediately jumped to 77%.  It then took two hours to complete the rest, since this is when the actual transfer to the device is happening, and my device is slow.  The whole time, it said 1 minute remaining.  Any idea why?

How many files were you transferring?

The routine analyzes the speed after each file finishes, so I guess one big and slow file could cause this.

Thanks.

I'm transferring 301 files, and they're all about typical length.  I think the longest is around 8 minutes.

Is it possible it needed to delete a bunch of files?

Estimates are based on "units of work".

A delete is 0.05 units of work.
A file transfer is 1.0 units of work.
A conversion is 10.0 units of work.
A playlist transfer is 0.2 units of work.

Then, we determine the percentage of total units of work completed.  If it jumped to 77% for you, it makes me wonder if there were a lot of files that were deleted.

Thanks for any help.

Are you using the HH cache?

Hmm... I think it's probably due to conversion.  Most of the files had already been converted and stored in the conversion cache, so all it had to do was transfer them.  Unfortunately, the whole reason this happened is that I accidentally unplugged my device while it was transferring to pick up a call, so MC didn't recognize any of the files that were on the device, and had to start all over again though they were already converted.

In a coming build:

NEW: Handheld time and progress estimates take the relative file size of each file into account.
NEW: Handheld time estimates nicely handle files in the conversion cache to provide a more accurate estimate.

I've noticed my handheld will transfer all the files (looking at the detailed view), and then it seems to freeze up MC for a couple minutes before completing. Is this normal, and if so is there a way it can be done without the interface slow down? This is only with a sync of a few new files so the actual transfer is pretty quick.

Also I'm having some files that MC always think need to be re-synced every time I connect the handheld. I fixed a couple of these by manually deleting the files with Windows Explorer, disconnecting, reconnecting and syncing with MC. The other couple still transfer every time it is connected.

I've also noticed a few times that files didn't sync. These were downloaded podcasts that I noticed weren't on the handheld after a sync yesterday. After syncing today the files did appear on the handheld. I know they were available to sync the previous time so there may be an issue here.

I'm using the latest (12.0.139) MC beta. My handheld is an iRiver H10 20Gig.
