Editing Number Plays and Last Played
« on: January 14, 2007, 06:11:21 am »

I'm having a bit of a problem getting decent sound quality from the ipod to car interface so I'm thinking of going back to using the car cd changer. With this in mind, is there any way to edit the number of plays and last played fields in MC? Even if it's just "Increment by one" and "Change to todays date" it would enable me to use the cd changer but still keep up-to-date data for smartlists.

TIA

What car?  What iPod interface?  With my factory head unit, I have the USA*Spec adaptor that hooks the iPod in to the external CD Changer port.  Only sound 'issue' that I have is that the volume is too low if I turn on soundcheck.  Quality of audio is just fine.  If yours is not, then you have a problem with the adapter or the head unit.

Okay, you asked for it. It's a 2006 model Toyota Land Cruiser with the integrated satellite navigation. The interface I am referring to is just a Belkin FM transmitter but I have looked in to systems such as Dension and they don't seem to offer anything better than the Belkin for my car (note the integrated sat nav I mentioned, which stops many systems on the market integrating). Dension do have a possible solution but it involves removing the centre console from the car to find out whether I have an eleven pin or twelve pin CD connector (and loosing the CD changer into the bargain).

To be honest, just editing the playcount and date seems easier for the time being.

I see that at least some of the 2006 Land Cruisers have a cassette deck.  Does yours?  I use a Cassette deck adapter in the Pathfinder, and it works much better than the FM transmitter I use in the Aviator and when traveling (in rental cars).

Sorry for the delay. The car does have a tape deck but when I (rarely) play tapes there's a sort of background whine that changes with the engine speed. I'll buy an adapter and try it but I'd assumed I'd get the same problem as I have with normal tapes.

I'd still like to know whether it would be possible to alter the last played and number plays fields. I'd be quite happy using the CD changer is this were possible.

If you get the alternator 'whine' with tapes, then I would expect you will get it with a tape adaptor too.

As to editing the fields:
Don't think in can be done INside of MC, but you could do the following:
Open those fields in properties and check the 'store tags in file' option.
Then do an update tags from library for all files.
Now these data items will exist as tags in the files and can be edited with an external program.

Only issue will be with file formats that don't support tags (or custom tags).

Someone using a file format that doesn't support file tags in this day and age would be seriously troubled.  Lol.  Isn't wav about the only format that doesn't support tags and I don't know about you, but two times my 300GB collection with no gains isn't that appealing.

Storing the info in the file and editing with an external program is certainly an option but is does seem a little long winded. Is there any way these fields can be made editable? As things stand, this is a problem for anyone who doesn't have the facility to integrate a portable player into their car.

Can anyone advise on a tag editor that can edit the last played and playcount fields? I've downloaded and tried 6 so far but not one of them can edit these fields.

Downloaded this morning and it looks excellent. The last played date is appearing as a long integer. Do you know how to convert a date to this number? I assume MC is using a number of days/hours/minutes since a particular date.

TIA
