Beta No More
« on: January 28, 2007, 05:32:52 pm »

Seeing as how MC12 is a no longer beta anymore (according to a user of this forum) will we see little updated versions pop up with less bugs and more fixes within the program? Or is this all for MC12? Who here thinks that there may be another updated release from MC12 correcting some of the bugs in the program?

Should I expect to see a Media Center 12.0.155 or greater, very soon?

Based on my experience with MC since version 8 (when it was called Media Jukebox), we have seen many updates to a program after it comes out of beta. Most of them are bug-fixes and changes and often new functionality as well. J River is one of the few software developer who has been very good about releasing bug-fix releases at a regular interval. The interval can vary depending on the number of bug-reports and severity of them. It could be high in the beginning and then reduce in the frequency when the product is more stable and J River folks move to the next alpha/beta.

I have been using JRiver for a few years now.  They are good about updating their software, bug fixes, etc., which is one of the reasons I continue to use and purchase their products.  Have no fear, updates are probably around the corner...

It Looks Like They Are Updating MC12 About Once A Week For Non-Beta Testers.

I think this may be the Ideal way from here on out.

I think J River wanted to limit the beta testers and also put something more stable out to the masses (not that it is not normally stable).

Who are Non-Beta Testers? And what do you specifically mean when you say"

At first they Selected About 25 Beta Testers (When The First MC12 Builds Were Created) Back Maybe 6+ Months Ago.

As MC12 Came A Long They Opened Up MC12 For All Users, But Beta Testers Normally Got The First Shot At A Beta (I Think To Make Sure MC12 Was More Stable For The Masses)

When you say later coming this week I should see something, do you mean another MC12 updated release?

Yes.  They are currently releasing new builds of MC12 to the "general public" about once per week.  Occasionally more or less often, if the current "beta" builds are more or less stable (respectively).  To be clear, JRiver has made no specific promises of targets for releasing new builds, but based on how it's been working thus far, they've been updated about once per week.

That gives those of us who download and test the new builds daily a chance to weed out any bugs and beat on the builds for a while, before they go out to the world-at-large.  That allows JRiver's programmers to take more risks with the software (without worrying about alienating new, inexperienced, or frankly normal customers who just want their software to work), by limiting the really "bleeding edge" builds to a smaller closed group of experienced (and willing) users.  As soon as the new stuff has proved "mostly safe", then it is generally pushed out to the public.

It's a little similar to the "trunk vs. branch build" system that Mozilla uses for their releases (though they have a more free form three tiered system -- unsurprising for an open source project).

There's still testing and bug fixing going on and updates will be posted as they are deemed ready for prime time. MC12 may not be strictly beta anymore, so I guess you could call it Pre-Release.
