Handheld conversion embeds track images
« on: November 09, 2006, 03:18:53 pm »

Hi,

I've noticed that even though my cover art images are stored as folder.jpg files on my PC, that when MC converts the files to .ogg format when transferring them to my handheld player, it embeds the cover art in each file (using COVERART and COVERARTMIME tags). Is there any way to prevent or configure this behaviour? My handheld player can't display cover art in this way (and in fact fails to read the rest of the tags as a result  :().

I'm using 12.0.109 at the moment, but it's been like this for a while. At the moment I manually remove the offending tags using foobar2000.

Regards,
Jim

MC does this by design, since external cover art obviously isn't supported on a device. (but internal cover art is by some devices)

Since it's only a few KB per file, it doesn't seem like a big deal either way.

Hi Matt,

You're right in that it's not a big deal in terms of the size of each file but unfortunately my player doesn't parse the tags correctly when there are large COVERART tags present and I wondered whether I'd missed an option somewhere.

I'm using Rockbox on the player so maybe it'll get fixed at some point  :-\

If it's a big deal, we may be able to sneak in an option before MC 12 is released.  Anyone else looking for this?

Thanks.

Thanks for at least considering it, Matt. I'll be your best friend if you add it  ;)

I'm not sure whether other players make use of the cover art? Do some of them read and display the embedded tags? Anyone....anyone....?

Just found this thread.  I would love the option to turn off album art embedding in tags.  My player fails to read the tags (vorbis) when album art is embedded.

Could I ask that the cover art is resized before it is added to the MP3 files?  I store large cover art and as a result, MC adds the entire JPG to the MP3 files.  I would really welcome a checkbox in handheld settings to resize cover art to 300x300 or so.  This would save a lot of space for me.

I'm still hoping that an option might be added one day  :)

Now, is there an option to globally not embed images in tags?  I think I read that there was, but I still haven't found it in any menu.

Not when converting to the handheld AFAIK.

But what about throughout your whole library, to not embed cover art?

OK I've checked MC now:

Tools->Options->File Location->"Store images in tags also" checkbox
