A strange thing happend to me on the way to the stereo yesterday.

I was listening to my new headphones, some AKG K601s, and playing back a Mark Knopfler tune "Golden Heart" at 24/96, listening to the EMU1212M>digital coax>DAC1>601s.

I started hearing a quiet puffing, like a digital click/artifact covered in velvet.

I played another well recorded track from The Band's Jericho album and sure enough it was there. I switched headphones and ouput jack, still there.

Switched to 16/44 and it disappeared.

All this via ASIO.

Today it's gone; I can't reproduce this anymore.

thoughts?

I like to leave the system at 96kHz since I was archiving vinyl at 24/96. This way I could use MC & FFDSHOW to upsample everything and not have to switch sample rates when watching a movie, listeing to music, or recording.

Now I think I am going to use 24/44 to make things a bit more simple all around. In light of the other thread a posted regarding downsampling cpu usage, I don't think it's feasible to share some of my vinyl rips with my family if their PCs can't play them back. If I needed a CD, I used the MC DSP options to burn 16/44 to disc; nice feature.
