My entire library is in FLAC.

I'd like to convert selected albums to mp3 and store in a new folder ... without losing the original FLAC files, and, keeping/adding all the tags to the mp3 files.

Reason for doing this is so that I can add the music that's captive to my computer in FLAC to my Wife's iTunes library, and, to my kids cell phones.

I tried a FLAC to mp3 converter that I got off the web ("Switch") but it didn't preserve the tags (?) so iTunes didn't have proper song titles and album titles. (Song titles included album name, and no album name or artist name when folder was added to iTunes library.)

Figure there must be some way to do this cross conversion using MC12 as the engine.

Try OmniEncoder. It's easy and does tag conversion between formats.

MC will also do what you want, just do a convert format (without deleting the original).

Right click->Library Tools->Convert Format->Options.  Make sure the "Send original file to Recycle Bin" is turned off.

I did this recently.

I installed the latest lame and used the custom parameters option to '-V 2 --vbr-new'.


Basically what Tom said with the option to move the files to another location and create artist/album dirs there.

You can also setup a virtual handheld device, by
going to Tools-> Options -> Handheld Device,
and Add Device.
Just set a path on your hard drive, and then you can
set up individual settings for the conversion, and keep
it synced as you add new albums to your collection.
You can use specific playlists to decide which albums are synced and
not synced.

I do this with APE->Mp3.

If you're going to do this, I recommend changing the file Path
to [Album Artist(Auto)]\[Album] as otherwise multiple artist
albums can get split up.

I have had success in the past using the handheld functionality to build a converted directory for selected playlists.  I then run a freeware utility called 'itunes library updater' on the itunes library - which synchronizes the itunes library with the converted files.

The problem I am having now is that I have some FLAC files in the handheld playlist.  I get a 'file not supported' message in the handheld syncronization status column, and the FLAC files do not get converted.  .APE files get converted to .MP3 fine, but I can't figure out how to configure the synchronization to convert FLAC.  FLAC files play fine.

what is the [media type] setting for those flac files?

I suspect MC is categorising them as document files. If my suspicion is correct, edit the media type to make them audio files and they should then convert to mp3 during synchronisation.
