Request: More Theater View screenshots on JR web page
« on: January 04, 2008, 09:12:16 am »

I kow you guys are working like crazy on new releases of MC12. However, I did a Google Image Search the other day for screenshots of MC12 with which to promote your hard work to others.

The picture of Theater View I found wase basically the one on your website. It didn't seem very up to date and showed only music files. I was on a thread on AVSforum touting how great JRMC12 was for organising and playing back video files. I linked to a couple of pictures, but there still had to be a leap of imagination of what it could be like for a large video collection, with 3d effects when scrolling etc. I didn't have time to take screen grabs myself; it'd just be nice if the web site marketed itself a little more visually.

Here are a few I just took. I redid the initial description and dropped the Web Media and put it within Video as I just wanted the two initial categories.

I like your idea of using DVD / Video.  I always get annoyed with anything other than DVDs because then they don't line up perfectly.  They aren't professionally produced with similar quality + menu, subtitles, etc.

Currently I just restrict my library to only DVD but your idea is unbelievable.  I have a lot of video in our Pictures folder (video taken with our still cameras) and I could add that using your method.

You've also done a great job classifying movies.  How do you classify them?  What is your source?  I'd like to do that, too.  Currently I just use a few main categories: Christmas, Comedy, Documentary, Home, Movies, Music, Television.  Movies is about a third of all them and I could break that down a few times.  The less scrolling the better!

What is nice about MC is that you can import everything across the drive and then arrange it which differs greatly from most other programs that are based in the folder scheme.

I wanted to be able to set MC12 up to not only mimic Microsoft but more importantly exceed it in every way (games is about the only thing missing). The more I delve into the product, the more I find out what MC12 is really capable of for HTPC needs (sadly, this may be one of the reasons for the lack of more adoption- it has so much the average user gets lost -- maybe MC13 needs a template option for new users to download and be up and running from those of us who have taken the time to learn 30% of the program).

As for your question.

Action, Anime, Comedy, Documentary (this is new, I liked your category) Drama, Foreign (New- Just loaded Kill with Intrigue and several other old Jackie Chan movies, and oldboy/ lady vengeance last night) Horror, Independent, Children, Romance, Sci-fi, Suspense (forgot this one) Television, Thriller, and Trailers. I like having the trailers because, my plan (albeit a large one) is to create the trailers for all of my movies (most are right on the disk) and then hopefully in the future version of MC, I could have the cover art and then play the trailer to the movie as a sort of preview.

The decision to use these categories was mostly a decision between my wife and I. We love movies (granted we are now where near your amount of DVDs :) ) and since this database is for us, we thought our categorization mattered more. Some movies are probably misclassified but when we are looking for a movie we know exactly where to go as we think of a movie.

I think the most important thing for us was trying to find the mix. I wanted categories that numerous movies would fit and it would not over complicate things making a field with three movies. About the only movies that make things irritating are those like Oceans 11-13 sure they are comedy movies but they have action and suspense. When I want an action movie, I do not want to see this movie in the field yet it is not a comedy when I want to laugh hysterically. I ultimately decided on comedy.

A friend of mine built is server and took his classification to the extreme, teen movies, slasher flicks, psychological thrillers, etc. It took like five levels to get to a movie and for me it was too much.

At the base level I think you cannot go wrong with DVD/Video. I moved the web media to video but I may put it back as I have a little too many video folders.

I'm gonna write this as I read yours.

30%?  I wish I knew 30% of MC.  My annoyance is that if I categorize, it can make it more difficult to find movies.  So it is vital to use the right categories and then if another user disagrees with the category it can get messy.

For the trailers thing: I have asked a few times before for them to add a "Related Content" feature.  Wouldn't that be neat if it showed you the soundtrack for the movie your watching?  When your listening to a song it would show you the remix or same song by other artists, etc.  Yes, it could be incredibly complicated and would require a lot of thought but it could be amazing!

I recently discovered I can use folder location.  Most people don't want this but in my case, I have a huge single drive so I have no issue with using folders.  It is precisely (exactly) (completely) (100%) what I have been looking for.  No more filling Genre from filenames and having one classification level.  Now I have things broken down to Television/Show/Season X/Discs in season.  That makes scrolling less and nicer.

You are right about MC requiring some effort.  I put in (when I'm on the "improve MC/HTPC experience" kick) tens of hours a week.  It's easily a part time job researching and deploying improvements.  But it's worth it because we have lots of nice hardware--especially our large server.  Although we're down to maybe 150 DVD capacity left, which includes some padding space for a little other stuff but that's scary.  I could build another server with the same case, etc. (another one) and then just use 750GB drives.  That's 3.5TB more or 450 DVDs.  That's probably not even enough!  Mainly because other data areas are increasing, too.  Not just DVDs.
