I synched the iPod in 11.1 one final time, closed 11.1 then opened MC12.  Set up MC12 to sync to the same playlists but MC12 says it needs to transfer 6175 files and it will be 23Gb over capacity.  It seems to be getting confused

Do I really need to initialise and start again to make it play nicely just because I upgraded to MC12 or am I missing something?

I suggest starting from scratch.  MC12 does a better job of syncing iPods, but it does work a little different.  Also, Apple has made changes to their DB structure which MC12 has catered for.  All of these could be creating your issue.

It may appear to be an extra step, but my experience suggests that the longest path between 2 points is a shortcut. So I would make sure you have the latest iPod firmware, initialize the iPod in MC12, and do a full sync.
