Desperate for Help With Smartlists
« on: April 26, 2007, 10:09:07 am »

I'm trying to create two smartlists that display the first 200 most played songs in my library. I have managed to create the first list, songs 1 to 100 sort of successfully, but have no idea on how to create the other one, that shows the songs 101 to 200. I've tried every which way, but can't seem to get my mind around how. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Steven F

Create the second one to show the 200 most played (from 1 to 200) and exclude the first one. That would give you the 101 to 200 if I'm not wrong.

Create a smarltist that sorts by [Number of plays] (in descending order)

then add a limit so it shows only 200.

I think that the ~limit modifier is a tad overkill for this scenario, Deivit's approach is spot on:

[media type]=audio ~sort=[number plays]-d -p="enter top 100 playlist name here" ~n=100

-marko.

Deivit

What do you mean, exclude the first one?

I in fact managed to create the second one, 101 to 200, but the sequence is out of sync, and i can figure out how to show the list in order of 1 to 100, or preferably, 101 to 200.

Is there an easy way to create as many of these lists as i wish, for example:

1 to 100
101 to 200
201 to 300
and so on

It seems an easy thing to do, but i just can't.

Thanks for any help on this issue

Hi Steven,

Did you try Marko's suggestion? That should work.

Basically, the idea is to create a smartlist of your files sorted by number plays (in descending order). Since you already have a smartlist for the first 100 files (1 to 100), if you "exclude" that smarlist from the new one and limit it to show only 100 files, you'll get the 101 to 200. For the 201 to 300 you do the same thing, but exclude the other two smartlists (1-100 and 101-200)... and so on. The syntax provided by Marko should work.

If you prefer to build the smartlist using the wizard, just add a "new rule":
Playlists -> Is not Any -> (select each time from the dropdown the playlist/s you have to exclude, as per the above explanation).

Finally, add two "new modifier":
Sort by -> [Number Plays]-d
Limit number to -> 100 items

Hope it helps better.

Hello Deivit

I actually figured the whole thing out a few minutes after sending the last past and now i can create as many smartlits as i want, so thank you for all the help, thanks also to Marko and hit_ny for all their help.

I have just one finally problem, if i want to sequence the lasts in order how would i do that? What i mean is this:

The first smartlist is 1 to 100, the second list is sequenced 101 to 200 and so on? Hope you understand what i mean.

Thanks again

I'm not aware of any way to do it. The "Seq Number" is a non-editable field that populates itself according to the list you're viewing and I'm affraid you can't "force" MC to start a list with seq number 101 or 301 or whatever as you would like to. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Therefore, if you want separate playlists for your most played songs in groups of 100, your Playlist 201-300 containing 100 items will always get seq numbers 1 to 100.

Sorry.
