No keyboard control for DVD menu
« on: March 24, 2007, 07:58:57 am »

I'm trying MC12 before upgrading from MC11.1, so excuse a simple question and problem that I cannot find a configuration for.

I tried playing a DVD and when it had posted its menu GUI I couldn't find a keyboard option that would actually do anything (e.g., navigate the menu or even select 'play').  The only key that did anything was the 'pause/play' key that would pause/play the menu's animation and music.

My keyboard, which works well with other players, is a "Gyro" remote keyboard which includes "media playback" keys (e.g., pause/play, stop, chapters, FF, RW, etc).

Let me know if I haven't provide enough info.

TIA & cheerios  :)

Arrow keys (left, right, up, down) are used for navigating DVD menus.  Use the Enter key to select.

CTRL+right Arrow for FF
CTRL+left Arrow for REW

etc.

I edited a typo above (got left and right mixed up).

Make sure you have the latest build from the top of this board.

Some decoders may not be fully DVD compliant.  You can choose what decoder to use in Options > Playback > DVD playback settings...

These do not work for my "Gyration" keyboard, which is what I use for a remote control.  It's 'play/pause', 'next', 'previous' and 'stop' buttons work ... but when the DVD's menu comes up there is nothing on this keyboard that would engage the menu's 'play', or allow for navigation.

Any ideas?

Does the DVD menu selection track the mouse properly or is it invisible?

Also, are you running the latest MC?

Try a few other choices in Options > Playback > DVD. (decoder, renderer, etc.)

Also, try another disc just to be sure it isn't disc related if you haven't.

These do not work for my "Gyration" keyboard, which is what I use for a remote control.

Is it that they don't work at all, or they don't seem to work inside the DVD Menu?

If they don't work at all in MC (like not in Theater View and not in the Main Standard View UI of MC at all) then I'd like to know because I've been thinking about getting one of those keyboards.

If it just doesn't seem to work in the DVD Menu, then it's very likely the playback filter as Matt described.  If you search for my usename and "DVD" here you'll find that I did some fairly extensive DVD filter testing a while back.  I found that the WinDVD filters had an issue in MC (and other DirectShow players) where it didn't show the "overlay" in DVD Menus.  The overlay is how the DVD Menu highlights the currently selected button (there are three states, unselected, selected, and activated).  Therefore, if you're using the WinDVD filters (or another set that suffers from a similar issue) you might be selecting different items with Up/Down/Left/Right but you can't tell because there's no feedback on screen.  I'd try CCCP (free), ATI's CyberLink filters (sorta free), or nVidia's PureVideo filters (not free).

Yes ... using the mouse works as it should, I'm just to lazy to get up and cross the room ...<g>...

It's not specifically DVD related, all menus do not work

Regarding the decoder, I just finished getting the ffsshow to work properly and send Dolby5.1 compatible data out the s-pdif port.  I'm open to specific suggestions regarding the decoder, but they all required altering the registry for making sure s-pdif worked properly.

thanx for your replies & cheerios  :)

I finally got my keyboard to work properly after installing the XP codec pack, and choosing "automatic selection" for DVD playback.  However, in doing so I broke the S-PDIF output that was fixed by Yaobing's suggestions in this thread:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=38050.msg273055#msg273055

Many kudos to JRiver for making MediaCenter what it is, but this should be as easy as installing WinDVD.  As much as MC is my preferred music library and player, and much as I'd like to use MC for DVDs and AVIs, configuring it should be a lot easier.

The video decoders that show for DVD playback are: (1) Intervideo (WinDVD), (2) Cyberlink (ATI), (3) MPV, (4) GPL and (5) Nero (and automatic).  I may play some more with this, but it's frustrating.

I believe I have verything working properly, after choosing th ATI options and making the registry mods as in this thread:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=38050.msg258847#msg258847

... still, it should have been easier :)
