XP cd burning errors
« on: August 24, 2002, 02:57:10 pm »

Well I guess XP is not perferct, or maybe MJ and XP are not perfect.

When I got my Gateway Computer and loaded MJ everything worked perfect. I must have burned twenty cd's perfectly, but I don't know and this may be my imagination but, when I got back from vacation and updated to the current version and all others since then I have had nothing but trouble.  Now!  I am not totally convinece it is MJ because I started using the XP cd burning program for data disks for my picture backups and somehow, someway I started having problems. Gateway came with Roxio CD Creator and I used it to format my disks for burning and everything started falling apart on both ends MJ and Roxio.  I know MJ had a conflict with Roxio with WIN98. Is there known problems with XP PRO?

Here are the errors I get with MJ when attempting to burn.

Error 'Start DAO RECORDING' command failed on device 1:1:0 Unable to set disc Paramenters

Error'Write' command failed on device 1:1:0 Unexpected taret error (04h 00h 04h)

Error: Unexpected failure reading file Cache file/Disc read error encountered

Error: 'Write'' command failed on device 1:0:0 Read/Write error on bad medium detected (04h 02h 03h 0ch 00h)

As you can see all errors are different!

Could it be a defective CD DRIVE

I unstalled MJ and re-installed and was able to burn 1 cd without errors.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am thinking I might do a clean install and delete Roxio all togehter. I would like to avoid doing that, but I have tried just about every suggestion on MJ FAQ, MICROSOFT FAQ and ROXIO FAQ.

Turn off any utilities that allow burning to CD as if it were an ordinary drive.  DirectCD?

Thanks Jim for your response!

I even tried to burn a cd with Media Player and it came back with "will not fit" under status!

I even deleted Roxio and unchecked "enable cd recording on this drive under properties.

All these problems seem to go away(somewhat) when I rebot the computer.  I really don't think itis MJ.
When I try drag and drop from explorer I get error after error after. Sometimes when I right click in explore to SEND TO the divice does not appear there.  Then the next time I rebot everything works perfect.

What a mess!  I thought I died and gone to Heaven when I got XP and MJ worked without any flaws.

No

I Have Two Gateway computers, and both have Windows XP and they both burn just fine.

I do have 3 versions of Roxio CD Creator only version 5 is compatable with windows xp, and version 5 sucks just like the other 2 versions.

Nero is better by far than Roxio (IMHO)

If I can help it I will never get another computer with Roxio sofware on it.

King

I am using Ver 5 Roxio, and it sucks!

How do you go about deleting everything related to Roxio?
Maybe if I get it out of there MJ will work.

What Nero version works with XP PRO?

I am at wits end!

Sorry to be a pest.

So....what you're saying it is like Realone (it never goes away unless you reformt?

Since you are a 2 Gateway person, did you use the install disks from Gateway to reload XP.

If so did it go smoothly as can be expected?

Thank You for your response to my questions!

Easyrider,
Did you try settings/control panel/add-remove programs?

Reboot afterward.

Jim

I know this is not your problem, but I feel I get the best answers from MJ Forum and MJ Staff, Thanks for taking the time to help me.

Yes! I just deleted using add/remove. It is gone.  Now I am using the internal cd burner program from XP.  However, it will not read the data on the disk, since it was formatted using CD Direct.

I will admit I am not an expert when it comes to computers, however I have been around computers since creation, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to burn a cd with XP if it is not formatted! Even the help files with Microsoft does not even tell you the steps to make a cd readable in a drive. Don't you have to format?  I know the answer is Yes.... but, with what?

I can here you all laughing!, but what is the answer?

Again Thanks to You and King for helping me!

No, we're not laughing.  We've all been there.

You don't have to format a CD to write it.  There are exceptions, I think, for programs like Adaptec's INCD or DirectCD?

You don't have to format anything for MJ.

Jim

I know you don't with MJ.

My question was related to XP PRO CD Writing Wizard?

How do you format the CD without CD Direct installed on your computer? Thats my dumb question.

If you don't what to answer this I can understand, since this is between Mirosoft and me.

This will be my last pest question!

I will check in and see if there are any other responses

Thanks

You don't normally have to "format" a CD.  That's only when you have a program that makes the CD drive behave like a floppy drive.

Read/Write and eraseable is silly when disks cost 25 cents.

Easyrider,

If you are using XP or XP Pro, just type in 'cd burning' in the search portion of Help. Gives good instructions for using XP's burning utility.

Might as well ditch the one created by roxio unless you plan on reinstalling that.

OOPS!!

See you did read the help file. Forget about formatting cds they are not like floppy disks'. You should be able to just drag and drop from explorer. Once the disk has all the info just burn. If it is data that will only be used on your computer you may want to consider using CD-RW disks. They are erasable many times over and probably more cost effective then cd-r's when it comes to data. Unless youy are looking for something that will be archived and never touched again < read--> photos.
