Theater View Play modes?
« on: May 18, 2007, 11:43:33 pm »

I posted this here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=40589.0

That post is getting long and I was worried it would get buried.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My biggest gripe about theatre view is the play button.

1 - Invite all my friends around for a party
2 - Put my playlist on to start the ball rolling
3 - Friends pick up the 'REMOTE' and start browsing
4 - Friend finds a song he has not heard a while and clicks on it then on play in the drop down

5 - MC NOW REPLACES THE ENTIRE PLAYLIST WITH THE ENTIRE ALBUM.

Could we not have this honour the 'double click' option in standard view. I know some people like this, but not one guest I have had has got it correct.

Play - Play ONLY current selected song now then carry on with the playlist (ie add song to top of playlist)
Add - Add song to end of playlist.

There is a 'play all' button that is pointless in the current setup because it always plays all.

Simon.

I second that. Personally  I prefer the default play behaviour to be "Play (current selection replaces playing now)" rather than "Play (add current to top of playing now)". If theater vew honoured the playback options of standard view though, our different preferences wouldnt be an issue. Play all is especially annoying when you select just one image or video, but it plays evewrything else in the list.

Yes, it's annoying to remember that it works different from what i set as an option in Standard View.

It can't use the Standard View option since that includes "File Properties".

A new option would be fine, but we're not sure what people want.

Currently, a menu (for a file or artist, etc.) has "Play" and "Add".

There's also a "Play All" button in any view with files.

Finally, there's the "Play" button on the remote.

Could someone lay out their ideal approach, taking into account all.  Thanks!

After talking about this internally, we thought of two approaches:

A single option for "Play behavior" with these choices:
Replace Playing Now (single)
Replace Playing Now (all)
Add to Playing Now (to end)
Add to Playing Now (play now)
Add to Playing Now (play next)

This would be the command you would get when picking "Play" in the menu, or when pressing "Play" on the remote.

There would still be an "Add" command for building a playlist.

"Play All" would continue to work the same way. (replace Playing Now)

Add a single option
  • Preserve Playing Now on play

With this checked, any play commands would do "Add (play now)".  It would be impossible to clear Playing Now without going to Playing Now and choosing "Clear".

How about 1 more option:
Add to Playing Now (shuffle)
or
Add to Playing Now (shuffle remaining) (If you want to get really descriptive)

This would add the item(s) to playing now and shuffle them in with the rest of the items that have not yet been played.

Reasoning,
I tend to throw a couple of albums in Playing now, hit reshuffle, then play.  Later as I'm listening, someone decides they want to add something, so I add it to Playing now, but now my only option is to reshuffle again, which also reshuffles everything I've already heard...

Another solution would be to make a Reshuffle unplayed command.

Matt, this is perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But please, please, please.... add a CLEAR button to Theater View's Playing Now AS WELL!!. This is essential when you want to build a playlist from scratch. Standard View has this and is just as important in Theater View.

First option looks good.

I presume we set this in Theaterview options?

Maybe there should be a menu of:

Play - (does what I have set as default)
Add - (Adds song to end of current playlist)
Select - (What does this do exactly?)
Other - (This pops up a menu with all the choices)
Cancel - (closes menu - duh!)

I would be happy with the single option for "Play Behavior" but some may want more.

Like I said at the top, I know what the program will do as I bugger around with it for an hour a day, its my guests (or family) that tend to stuff it up.

Thanks for looking at this.

I really like the idea of having all options available on the menu too. If all of them is too much though, then I'd really love to have at least: "Add to Playing Now (play next)" OR a "Next to play" kind of option.

Thanks again
