Theater View and CPU usage
« on: May 24, 2007, 10:31:43 am »

Hi Everyone,

What does everything think is "reasonable usage of CPU" for theater view? This is the details of my system:

Pentium 4 3.2 GHz hyper-threaded
1GB memory
ATI X1300PRO 256MB discrete graphics card
resolution: 1400x1050
Windows XP Pro with all latest updates/drivers/directx etc.

This is definitely not the top of the line system but not a slouch either.

On this system, just displaying the main page of theater view (audio, images, video, playing now... etc.) uses 54% CPU!! If I click on Pause/Break, I see only ~30 fps or so (I don't play games but I think I will get better fps in some FPS games with this system). Anytime I navigate (click on Audio or Video etc.), I see CPU usage jump upto ~75% or so.

Isn't this a bit too much of CPU usage?

I have a desktop (nVidia video card) and a laptop (Intel video card) : on the laptop TW is quite acceptable, on the Desktop is painfully slow

Thats not much to go on, an Nvidia card thats old enough is probably not a match
for a recent intel chip, even though situated in a laptop.

Something's not right. On an old pentium 4 1.7 ghz pc with 4x AGP card, I only get around 5% CPU utilisation while at Theater View's main menu. I used to have problems like what you've described early on when Theater View dev in MC12 was in it's infancy but not since.

Are you sure it's Theater View causing this? No other background apps? What about plugins and visualisations etc?

Nothing else is running. When MC is running in standard view, it is 1% or s. No files are being played so no visualizations/plugins etc. are active. I click View -> Theater View and it goes to 54%.

As a comparison, the computer I'm on now is at around 1-2% while playing and staring at Theater View's home.

A lot of this depends on video card memory, but you have 256MB, which is way more than enough.

What Theater View skin are you using?  Could you try a couple others?

Also, does it matter if you're at Home or inside Audio, Playing Now, etc.

Thanks.
