How to build your own internet radio station.....simple!

For streaming to the internet (radio station) i use Virtual Audio Channel and Broadwave (http://www.nch.com.au/index.html)., VAC is $25AUS and BW is FREE if you include a link to their site on your site. The best thing about BW is it streaming m3u and can be played by the default media player on Mac,PC and Linux. If you use the 'Best' track info display plugin for MC you can even show the Playing now info on your site with cover art etc...you will need to share the ..\best folder in IIS to gain access to the generated.html from across the internet.

I monitor the output from random radio by using the redirector included with VAC. I output to VAC then redirect to the onboard sound card which is connect to speakers in the bathroom. The logitech RF remote in the bathroom allows me to change the track (if needbe...thank god for smooth crossfades and volume leveling that works!!!) and turn the volume up and down. Because the VAC has the option of disabling volume control, the only volume that goes up and down is the volume of the internal sound card.

For all this to come together you must also have MC start in display mode and you must configure the redirector to start via a script. Disable DSP effects except for volume leveling and crossfade. DSP and highly compressed streaming audio can sound weird at times. Keep it simple.

In addition to the software i have mentioned Random Radio is presently running on a PIII-550mhz/512mb/Windows XP with IIS and the DynDNS client.

I'd just like to say thanks to Giles who was kind enough to reply to an email of mine with detailed instructions which I am now posting here:

From Giles:
Broadwave is simple to use and produces 2 audio streams for dialup and
broadband. It also gives you the option to choose the bitrate(s) for
the 2 streams from dropdown boxes. Broadwave is free to use if you
have a link to their site and is developed right here in Australia. It
is also resource friendly (i have a jriver, win xp/iis and broadwave
setup for my Random Radio running 24/7 on a PIII 900 with 256mb RAM
!!)

You can get VAC at: http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.html

Once you have installed VAC run the VAC control panel and create 1
audio channel and set the volume to disabled. The reason for this is
if you also have jriver playing music to the on-board soundcard and
maybe even have a remote, if you change the volume up or down it will
not affect the audio being streamed to the net via the VAC and
broadwave.

Now configure the jriver default soundcard (or create a new zone and
change the default soundcard for that zone) to be VAC not the on-board
sound card or wave-mapper etc.

Create a DynDNS (dynamic dns) domain name. DynDNS is a free service.

Install and configure DynDNS.Use the software as your router will
update to often and your domain name will be blacklisted and rendered
unusable.

Install Broadwave and configure it to use port 81 (we will use port 80
for IIS) and change the address to that of your dynamic dns domain
name. Finally select the software to start automatically and choose
the 2 bitrates of you audio streams. My suggestion would be to setup
the  dial up  for internet use and broadband bitrate for use on your
LAN as it supports much higher bitrates. I have my internet stream set
at 24kbps and it is faultless even when being streamed by a 28.8k
modem. The sound quality is pretty good considering.

To make it sound like it does, i use the jriver volume leveling and
have tweaked the equalizer to provide more treble and a little bass to
cope with the sound being flattened by being compressed into the
24kbps stream.

Now drag the jriver shortcut into your startup folder and configure
jriver to startup with the display view and to start playing current
playlist.

Reboot. you should now be ready to stream to the net.

open the dyndns url you created and add ":81" to the end to open the
broadwave links page on your server. click on either the dialup or
broadband links.
