They've been working on the technology behind that for ages. Remember seeing that photo thing in their lab area like a year ago.
It should be pretty cool "once it's affordable for jo blo".

All your digital photos are suddenly released and you can just 'leave them lying' on the coffee table for everyone to see instead of trapped on your computer out of sight of everyone.

Does look fairly cool.  Little things like this:

For communications, Surface features a standard Ethernet connection, WiFi, and Bluetooth, which opens the door to some incredibly slick-looking applications. In one, demonstrated in a Popular Mechanics video clip, Surface automatically detects a WiFi-enabled camera placed on the table and immediately downloads photos from the device. These "spill out" onto the table, where they can be sorted, resized, and edited by hand. Surface automatically establishes WiFi connections with Zunes placed on the table and could be used as a music kiosk or a way to push narrated tours to museum patrons.

Personally, I would prefer a wall, whole wall that is. Then I could have digital windows in that digital wall.

From what I understood from the Slashdot's discussion on this story (yeah I know how reliable those sources can be), this was an idea of one person outside Microsoft. Of course, Microsoft just borrowed it and ran with it.
