computer locks up when ripping CDs--help!
« on: August 22, 2002, 08:42:23 pm »

I've had a problem ripping Cds since downloading and installing MJ 8.0.348.  Here's the skinny:

I was ripping Cds with the MP3 Encoder with no problems.  I decided to try the OGG Vorbis encoder for kicks, hearing good things about it elsewhere.  The computer froze after about 4 songs, and it wouldn't even allow me to do an alt-cont-del restart, and I had to power down and power back up.  I decided to switch back to MP3, and it froze there too, same procedures required.

I give it a few days, restart my computer, and rip a few CDs with MP3 no problem.  Then I decide to try the OGG encoder again, with the same freeze-up problem.  I try ripping another with the MP3 encoder, and it froze three times.

I was not running any other programs when I experienced the problems today.

Here are my computer specs:
MicronPC, AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz
256MB DDR SDRAM RAM
ATA-100 Super I/O

I have no help but I have sort of the same problem. Ripping to
MP3 cbr, 256Kbs. When I try, Windows crashes. Blue Screen. No Action. Power off is the only option. Restart and download the MP3 plugin. Works great for three CD's and then crash. Re-download MP3 encoder and all works great for about three CD's and then crash.

Just to narrow down to whether it's a ripping or encoding problem, could you try ripping to wave format and see if you have the same problem? Hopefully you've got enough disk space :-)

Per your suggestion, I tried ripping three CDs using the uncompressed wave encoder, one after the other, no problem.  Noticed I got much faster ripping speed, too.

Then I went back to the MP3 encoder, got through one CD ok, and the very next CD caused the same problem as described above: the computer completely froze (no mouse movement, no keys would work, no ability to restart with alt-cont-del).  In fact, I noticed that when I restarted using the power button, the computer froze up on the restart unless I canceled the scandisk.

For reference, earlier the computer would freeze after about the fourth song on the CD.  Tonight, I got through to the second to last song on the CD before it froze.  Not much of an improvement.

Please help me, I need to rip my CDs and build my library for this software.

Thanks,

Ok, to narrow down further where the problem is, try ripping to a different encoder (wma or ape) and see if the problem exists. If it does, try turning off simultaneous rip/encode and see if it helps (with mp3 encoding).

I was having the same problem. While I was ripping MP3's using the internal LAME encoder the computer would just lock up, no mouse movement, no ctl/alt/del, no nothing. I tried all the different buffer settings and the rest and nothing worked.  I have an amd xp 2000 (overclocked), soyo kt 333 dragon ultra mboard, win xp, on board sound and tdk velocd 40/12/48 burner.

I decided to download all the latest drivers/bios/firmware etc. After some research on the internet this is what I did and it seems to have solved my problems.
1. downloaded latest firmware for my cdr.
2. downloaded latest winxp updates
3. downloaded latest MJ 8.0 updates
4. downloaded and flashed mboard bios with latest bios
5. downloaded and flashed via kt333 chipset with latest bios
6. in device manager, changed transfer mode of ide controller that my cdr was on to "DMA if Available".
7. changed motherboard bios settings to optimized default settings.

I am not sure which one of these things was the key, but I think the bios flash and the default mboard bios setting (although I had to change some settings from default) did the trick.

I am not overclocking anymore also. Now it works flawlessly.

good luck
