MC12 won't import iTunes MP4 (M4V)
« on: June 12, 2007, 11:43:00 pm »

I recently purchased my first videos from iTunes, expecting that I could manage them with MC12. I downloaded them (as .m4v files), but MC wouldn't import them. When I tried to import from the folder, it always says "0 files imported." If I go to "File>Open Media File," it "thinks" for a while, then I get a message that says there's nothing to play. Finally, if I try to drag the file in, the "Analyzing Files" box pops up, then it just goes away and nothing else happens.

I've tried renaming the files to .mp4, and I have the same results. They play fine if I open them with QT. I've read all the other posts I could find on here regarding this issue, but they're either incomplete, or the proposed solution doesn't work for me, like installing the CCCP codec pack. Installed with the same results. Any idea what might be going on?

I suspect your issue is related to the DRM on the video files.  Try this:

1. Leave the files named *.mp4, not .m4v.
2. Go to Options --> Playback --> DirectShow Playback Settings and uncheck MP4 from the DirectShow Filters list on the right.

If this works, it is likely that using the actual QuickTime engine is required for playing back DRM-protected M4V files.  If so, we really need JRiver to add an Apple-specific M4V option to that list, and have it unchecked by default.

All I can say about this other than that is frickin' DRM.   >:(

Thanks for the info. I've tried it with the .mp4 box checked and unchecked and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I have the same result either way. Any other thoughts?

Nope... I'm out of ideas really.  We need Yaobing to weigh in.

So, I have an update. I renamed all the files to mp4 and went over everything one more time. I discovered under the "Import" settings that Mpeg files are defined seperately from Quicktime files (which includes mp4 and m4v files) and that box wasn't checked. So, I checked it, ran the import and it added all the video files to the library. However, it added them under the "Document" section instead of Video.

I tried to add them to my iPod and consistently got an error. No explanation, the Queue just said Error. I tried to play the newly named mp4 files in Quicktime and they won't play. Rename them to m4v and they play fine in Quicktime, but when I try to import m4v's into MC, it find the files but says import unsuccessful. I've tried it with the Direct Show box checked and unchecked.

I'm at a loss and could really use advice from someone at JR.

Thanks.

Thanks for reporting the problem. It appears that Quicktime either does not like the way we use it when it comes to DRM protected video, or it simply does not want DRM protected video to be played outside of QT player itself. It returns an error when we attempt to open the file in QT. We will investigate further.

Thanks Yaobing. Do you think this is a problem that would be addressed in a future update, or is there a workaround for it? I'm finding that iTunes and MC12 don't play nicely when they sync separate files to the same device. I found a bunch of video files had been deleted from my iPod last night, and the ones that were left had been renamed.

Thanks again for your work on this. MC12 is a great product.
