Is there a Program subtitles option for TV viewing?
« on: July 09, 2007, 03:09:40 pm »

Is it possible to watch a program on TV with subtitles? Windows Media Center can do it, but I prefer JRiver Media Center as it is so much better. It can pick up all my channels where MS MCE can't. We use subtitles here in the UK (teletext, page 888).

I noticed that there is a Closed Captioning option in the TV Display configuration. However, if I check that, it doesn't stay checked. Is this for TV subtitles?

This would be really great, as I use subtitles due to my hearing disability.

Thank you.

There is support for Closed Captioning for most (but not all) analog TV devices. There is no such support for digital TV devices yet.

Closed Captioning is the subtitle standard for North America. I did add some code to try using Teletext in case CC does not work, but I do not know whether it works because it was never tested.

What TV tuner device do you have?

Would it be possible for me to test the Teletext code you added? I've tried BlazeVideo HDTV Player earlier, and that displays Teletext or rather TV subtitles. However, your application is by far the best  :)

See the screenshot below for details regarding my TV tuner

It looks like you have a dual DVB-T / PAL tuner.

As I mentioned, there is no subtitle support for DVB-T yet. For analog TV, the support is in Closed Caption. If you tried turning on "Closed Caption", and it did not display any subtitles, then it does not work. I am not sure how much info is logged with regard to this, but you can try turning on logging and email me a log file. My email address is yaobing at jriver dot com

The log shows that you played a couple of digital TV channels.

The Closed Caption option is currently not applied to digital TV channels as there is no subtitle support for digital TV. The only subtitle support, if any, would be in playing analog TV channels.

Guess I have to wait until you enable subtitle support for digital TV channels.

Would I be able to get in Analog mode, and if so, how do I set it up?

Thanks again for all your help.

Thanks again for all your help.

1. Make sure you have analog TV source (analog cable or antenna).
2. Connect the source to your TV card.
3. Go to TV Options. On "TV Channels" page, make sure the analog device you are using is selected in "Analog Video Devices" list (It looks that "Conexant 2388x Video Capture" is the only analog video device you have, in which case it should have been automatically selected).
4. Click "Analog Chan" button to scan for analog TV channels.
5. When scanning has finished, exit all options dialog windows. Your analog TV channels will be listed together with your digital TV channels.
6. Double click an analog channel to play it.

Thank you.

However, even the Analog channels doesn't display Closed Captions. No problem, I'll wait for digital TV teletext support  :)

Sorry for another post on this subject.

Are there any plans for digital channels Teletext (mainly subtitles, which is page 888) support? I'm not sure how many users you have in the UK which might find this useful, but I for one is quite willing to pay a fee for the extra work. See it as a commissioned project  :P  It would enhance my TV viewing, being hard of hearing.

I don't think many people have asked for the feature. I will need to learn how to do it. It is not high on my list, although I have always been telling myself I should do it one day.
