Matt or Nikolay - WMP loaded to overlay sound - problem?

I want to occasionally overlay a sound effect on top of a song that is being played by MJ8.  I have Windows Media Player loaded with the sound effect wave file.  As long as WMP is highlighted (window focus), pressing the space bar plays the sound.  Questions:

1) Does having WMP loaded and sitting idle do anything that "hurts" MJ, in terms of cycles, grabbing resources, etc.?

2) Is this the best way to do this?
