Do you own a fax machine at home?
« on: October 27, 2006, 11:09:12 pm »

Just curious.  Thanks!

BTW: how do you use Windows XP built in faxing to send faxes where you can scan in documents?  I see that you can add a cover page but after that, it asks for the phone number and sends the fax.  There is no way to scan and send documents that I can see!

Benn--

Thanks for bringing this up, you saved me a lot of time+trouble!  I wasn't aware of the embedded XP faxing capability, and I was busy tearing my hair out over how to send a fax from my notebook until I read your post.

Here's the little that I've figured out about it:

Once the fax service is installed under winXP, it registers itself as a printer called "fax" and should show under available printers in apps.  For me, I opened up Open Office and it was there, pretty as could be.  Selecting it as a printer starts the fax macro.

I would GUESS that your scanner acquire software would have the same capability, either as a printer or as an export.  Or possibly you can use Word or OO to acquire the scanned docs, do your mailmerge in software, and then print to fax.

::sigh::

Benn, you need to do some research.

Faxes have an international legal standing as verifiable documents that email does not.

I have one of those cheap Brother all in ones, scanner, printer card reader and stand alone fax machine. Space saving with decent enough print & scan quality to serve as my default printer. I'll use my laser for critical stuff and my new Epson photo printer for the occasional picture print job.

But my main reason for purchase is that it serves as a stand alone fax machine. I need not have the PC on all weekend to recieve the stray fax. No longer do I need to wait for the PC to boot up just to send a one page fax.

That said, if I'm sending a multi page fax with the docs already on the PC I'll use that instead.

I did use MS Fax with a modem. Worked great for receiving faxes and sending them if they where generated on the PC. Needed to have a scanner for sending other bits of paper, reciepts etc.
Got rid of the scanner and printer and replaced them with an all in one HP 7310 (refurb deal at Fry's) which does copy, scan, fax and print and it hangs of the network. Less boxes and it was easier for the wife and neighbor to use :-).
Use the copier more than the fax, would not miss it If i didn't have it, I'd just send it from work or get a fax to email service.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/icopy/

also, vuescan does a great job as well, creating excellent PDFs as well as GIII/IV images for fax.
