I have a few folders with about 1000 single tracks each, nearly all tagged with artist and most tagged with album info.  I would like to have these files moved into folders following a convention like [artist]/[album]/.

I know that I can burn them to a CD and have it put them in a folder structure.  Then I could delete the files and copy them from the CD with the folder structure.  But this seems clumsy. Is there another way in MC?

I want to do this to avoid album art issues with Vista Media Center, which seems incapable of consistently dealing with album art embedded in files.  If I switch to artist/album for all files, I can use folder.jpg and enjoy better compatibility across programs.

Yup sure is  ;D.  Highlight the files you want to "move" on your HDD (might want to try a couple first) then Right Click --> Library Tools ---> Rename Files from Properties ---> then make sure you check the "Directories" and "Filenames" check box and select the rule you want!

Thanks

ooh, ooh, ooh, Media Center is the best tool in the universe for what you want to do.

First make sure your tags for album and artist are correct.
Then go to the root folder for all the files you wish to rename.
Then select recursive (which will show all files in all folders below the root).
Then select all files (ctrl-a)
Then select Rename Files from Properties and
select the root for your destination
select the naming convention you want for folders (I use [Artist] - [Album])
select the naming convention you want for files (I use [Track #] - [Name])
   press go

And voila, everthing will be moved and renamed.

Suggest you practice a bit before doing this on your whole libary because you can make a heck of a mess if you do not understand what you are doing. :)

Thanks all!  I knew it had to be in there somewhere.  Tomorrow I'll give it a try, carefully.
