Sound Problems Again
« on: August 18, 2002, 01:44:23 pm »

I just followed the steps following to solve my problem of my rio500 not working under XP/MJ8.  Now, when I use my TV card software (ATI Multimedia Center with All In Wonder), my sound is scratchy and hollow.  The fix included deleting the Windows Media Audio codec.  Any thoughts on this?  Here are the steps I followed based on an earlier post:

To work well with MJ you need to get the Rio drivers installed that come with the MJ Plugin. If XP has already installed the drivers that come with it, I would suggest that you remove them fully by following the directions at

http://www.sonicblue.com/support/rio/default.asp?menu=support&submenu=Legacy_Rio&item=faqs&product=Rio_500_PC#20399

Also uninstall the Rio Plugin for MJ. Make sure your Rio is disconnected and reboot.

After you reboot and BEFORE you connect your Rio, download the MJ Rio plugin. When you connect your Rio and XP asks if you want to install the default drivers, DO NOT accept the default, instead, point the installation to look in your System32 directory where it will find the drivers that we distribute with the Plug-in.

After this, you should be set. If you are still stuck email me at steve@jriver.com

My system was really screwed up this past week. I had to go out and buy winxp again cause I lost my install disk. Talk about a headache and a waste of another $300.

I also have a rio500 and I could see if it works for me aswell. However, I'm running a service pack which could probably change things in xp compared to your system (I'm just assuming).

Is the scratchy sound coming from the computer, rio, or when you just watch tv? I missed the other thread so I don't know.

I'm sure if you stick with it, everything will get fixed shortly.

Dragyn, thanks for the info.  I am experiencing this problem only when I use the TV software (either my ATI software or the MJ TV Tuner).  This problem only began after following the steps I already listed.  Not sure what my next move should be, but I guess I should start by making sure I have all critical updates installed.  However, I am a bit unhappy that this should be necessary since my RIO worked great without requiring a fix when I was still using MJ 7.  So it seems this was a case that an upgrade turned out to be a bad idea.
