Smartlist with 1 hour, 50 % pop and 50 % rock
« on: September 06, 2007, 11:21:01 am »

I have found out how to put a modifier in the smartlist that will give me 25 tracks with 50/50 pop and rock, like this:

25,50%,{[Genre]=[Pop-disco-dance]},50%,{[Genre]=[Rock]}

But I had another modifier in the list set to one hour, and that's just overlooked. Can somebody tell me how to do the same with one hour of music instead of 25 tracks?

We can't do these at the moment.
I ran into the same problem for a 6 hour smartlist I wanted for my iPod. I settled on an average of 15 tracks/1 hour.
It gets reasonably close if you're just playing regular 3 - 4 minute tracks. I find that the majority of the lists get within minutes of the desired length, while every now and then I get one that's either way short or way over.

Works for me, not so good if the time factor is critical for you.

OK, thanks! I'll put down 14 tracks. If not I'm afraid MC will spend the rest of the week looking for a track that's 50 % pop and 50 % rock! ;) So if I can only solve that treepath problem I have in another thread, I'm good to go on this project.

Nice... Thanks marko.  I've been looking to do the same exact thing recently.  I just assumed I couldn't figure it out, not that it wasn't possible.

Hey, don't thank me all at once. I was just the one who took it up, so Marko could have a reason to answer it! ;)

Sorry... I meant to say thanks to both Mastiff and Marko, of course.   ;)

Since you want 50/50:
Create one smartlist  = 30 minutes of Pop
Create second smartlist = 30 minutes of Rock
Create third smartlist that contains the first two smartlists

You may want to bump the two smartlists to 32-35 minutes to increase the odds of getting a full hour of music.

That won't give you 50/50 by number of tracks, but it will give you 50/50 by play time.

Very clever! But unfortunately I can't get that to work. :( Using those two lists and then creating one list with the rule "Playlist is any of 'pop list' 'rock list'" gives me one to four rock tracks and 15-20 pop tracks. Do I need a mix or another modifier there?

Odd.  I tried it before posting and it worked fine.  How long were the rock tracks?  Since it is a 50/50 by time one or two long rock ballads could give the results you see.

I did:
Playlist 1 = Rock with a limiter of 33 minutes
Playlist 2 = Pop with a limiter of 33 minutes
Playlist 3 = Playlist is any of Playlist 1 and 2 with a sort of random

Nope. They're regular tracks 3-4 minutes each. I checked both the rock list and the pop list, and they both contain around 30 minutes of music every time I refresh them. The list that has those two lists as a rule gives me the mentioned result. Here's the export of the lists:

1. [Media Type]=[Audio] [Genre]=[Rock] ~sort=[Random] ~t=35m

2. [Media Type]=[Audio] [Genre]=[Pop-disco-dance] ~sort=[Random] ~t=35m

3. playlistid==88261919,=987893603 ~sort=[Random]

Or just make a playlist with all Rock & Pop sorted random.  Then make a playlist that pulls that playlist in and picks only 60 minutes.  You'll get 60 minutes with approximately half of each genre.

You've gotta remember the multiple playlist option even though it isn't as elegant.

Nope, that's still not it. It gives a great majority of rock tracks, which is probably logical because I have more rock than pop (4000 tracks versus 16 000 tracks).

The only difference here is that I did not use the sort on the base play lists.

OK, that still doesn't help. But I did say it wrong the first time around. What I get is from 0 to 4 pop tracks, not rock tracks. Do you have about the same amount of tracks in the two genres you made your playlists from?

Edit: And it doesn't make anything better that the drop-down list of the playlists is so narrow that I can only read the first part of the name on the playlists. :(

My exact setup:

[Media Type]=[Audio] [Genre]=[Pop] ~t=33m
[Media Type]=[Audio] [Genre]=[Rock] ~t=33m
playlistid==286041255,=69797889 ~sort=[Random]

I get ~30 minutes of pop and ~30 minutes of pop.  Track distribution is pretty even
A few refreshes:
9 Pop/7 Rock
7 Pop/9 Rock
7 Pop/8 Rock
8 Pop/6 Rock

Running .318 in case that makes a difference.

OK, but do you have approximately the same number of pop tracks and rock tracks in your library? Because I'm thinking that may be the problem here.

Rock = 4879 tracks

OK, that goes beyond weird! The ratio is very much the same as mine. And I still get the uneven balance every time. :( I'm updating to the latest build, just in case. I had an older version (by 40 betas, or so...).

OK, obviously some change to the algorithms here. Upgrading to the latest build actually gave me close to an even match, with 6-8 of the pop tracks and 8-10 rock tracks! Thanks for the help! And sorry about that... Oh, and I can see a lot more of the playlist name as well with the latest beta, even though it doesn't show quite enough.

Multiple playlists, yeah they're a neat trick. I try to avoid them if at all possible for no other reason than the hassle involved!!
For those that I do use, I tuck the foundation lists out of the way inside a group of their own and just leave them there to do their thing...

The smartlist editor is horizontally resizable... hover the mouse over the right/left hand end until it changes, then left click-drag it out the way. the fields will then grow so that there is no, or very little, truncation.

Woops... That's what I get for using remote VNC control over your main library computer!  :-[ Btw, unreliable rip with 45,8 % sounds rather bad. Are many of your tracks like that?
