Maxtor One Touch III 1Tb Drive
« on: September 05, 2007, 12:36:09 pm »

The other day one of the Maxtor 500 Gig Drives Failed

So I Left A Message To Maxtor Asking A Question About The Drives.

Since As Normal They Never Responded To My E-Mail I Decided To Take The Drive Housing Apart

I Figured Out What Drive It Was By Listening To The Read\Write heads Bouncing off The Platter, And The Rattle Of Lose Parts In Side the Drive Housing.

The Drives Are Serial ATA

So I Went To Best Buy And Bought A SeaGate 500 Gig SATA Drive, And Popped It In.

The Maxtor Manager Kept Telling Me That It Turned Off The Raid And Sis I Needed To RAM The Drive. Since It Is Out Of Warranty Fat Chance They Will Fix it. Even More so Since they Never Returned My E-Mail.

I Loaded Up The Maxtor One Touch Manager, And Reformatted The Drive, So Now It Seems to Be Working, And The Maxtor One Touch Manager Dos Not Show An Error On That Drive.

I Was Interested In Seeing If This Would Work Since The New Drive Is Not A Maxtor.

The New Drive Comes With A 5 Year Warranty, Where Maxtor Only Warenties There Drives For 1 year In Most Cases.

Coincidentally, Seagate acquired Maxtor so maybe that's why it worked.  ;)

Maybe, That's Why I Tried Seagate.

The Only Problem With This Conclusion Is The Software, Drive And Internal Hardware Was Made 2 years Before Seagate Bought Maxtor.

So Any SATA Drive May Have Worked.

What I Did Notice Is When There Was A Problem With One Drive, The Other Drive Had Issues Including Windows XP Where The Showing The Drives In Windows Explorer Was A Bit Slow.

So I Concluded It Maybe Better To Use The Drives As Raid 0 And Not Raid 1 And Have Another Maxtor One Touch III 1TB to have the orginal drive backed up on. As Long As Your Backups Are Current.
