New version of Musepack codec
« on: February 17, 2007, 05:38:30 pm »

Hi guys,

My first post!  ;D First, I'd just like to say thank you for the great work you guys have been doing with MC. I have been a long time user, and this is by far the best program I have ever used for managing my substantial (>3000 song) library!

I just wanted to let you know that there is are new versions of both the Musepack encoder and decoder, and I was wondering if you could implement these new versions in Media Center? Most of the music I have I've ripped in MPC, and I'd be very appreciative if my favorite media player could keep up with my favorite codec!  :)

Here's a link to the site where you can download the new versions (for Windows): http://www.musepack.net/index.php?pg=win
Here's a link to the changelog as well, if you're interested: http://forum.musepack.net/showthread.php?t=304

Thanks guys, keep up the great work!

I saw that a while ago but I didn't see anything in the changelog that looked like it would make a difference in MC.

The new decoding library has a new fast seeking system. It was discussed here: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=50130. Sluggish seeking has been the biggest problem with Musepack.

In that thread I asked if updating the source libraries would be difficult:

Quote
Would building a new decoder plugin for a player program be exactly similar process as before? I mean, could a developer just take the new library and repeat the same steps he/she did with the previous decoding library?

and got this answer:
Quote
They seem to use libmpcdec-1.2.2.
Libmpcdec-1.2.3 is backwards compatible with all 1.2 versions, so unless they modified libmpcdec sources, updating their plugin should just be a new compile with fresh sources. No code-source modifications needed.

IMHO, you should update it. The MP3, Ogg Vorbis and WMA formats are now up-to-date. Only Musepack is not.

If you decide to update remember to check how the discussed "fast seek" switch can be enabled. I have tested it with the current foobar version. It works perfectly fine and seeks much faster than the old decoder.

Naturally you should update the encoder too. Just replace the v. 1.15 exe file with the v. 1.16 exe file. (Currently I do that manually after installing each new MC12 build.)

This update probably would be pretty straightforward as you say. The upgrade I did before was a lot more difficult because the code the previous one was based on was not well suited to windows so it wasn't much of a guide to go on.

I did follow that thread you listed and it isn't obvious to me how to implement the fast seeking on the older encoded files. I'll look at that when I get time. My list is quite full right now...

Both input and encoder will be updated in the next build. Fast seek will be enabled by default for all mpc files. It works fine with old files from my testing..

Thanks. I'll test them.

Are you aware that a new version of the Musepack stream format, SV8, is finally under beta testing? This beta was released only a few days ago:

So have your tools ready...  :)

Yes, I saw that.

Seems like it might be better to have it out of beta ;)
