Album View - Developer needs advice :D
« on: August 16, 2002, 09:22:55 am »

Friends,

As you may be away coding for the whoopy-doopy-fast version of AV2 is well under way and I want your opinion.

I am about to glue the GUI to my classes and I want to know if you (as a user) would like an Office XP look or keep in line with the current skin setting of MJ?

You can't have both so don't ask :D

Personally I like the Office XP look but I appreciate that keeping in line with MJ won't scare people as much.

What do you think?

I have Win XP, but not Office XP, and use MJ unskinned. I hope I understand the question. What I vote for is this:

MJ skinned - AV has the skin 'look'
MJ unskinned, Win XP in 'XP style' - AV in 'XP style'
MJ unskinned, Win XP in 'classic style' - AV in 'classic style'

I think this is what you mean by 'keeping in line with current setting'. Hope this makes sense. I cant wait for AV2.

That's exactly right Lee.

If MJ is not skinned then it would use the OS skin.

I'd go for the officexp look.

I've used mediajukebox for bout 1 day now...  and album viewer for <10 minutes hehe... just went to these forums to see if there was any work being done on it.

Okay I got like 50 ways to improve this and only wish I could program to do it all myself so I could have my jukebox while I sat on the couch hehe

I think the fastest/most efficient way to browse is with the "overview" tab, a list of artists on the leff and the album pictures on the right.

Now the current thing with doubleclicking on a picture clears the playlist and plays that cd... or the rightclick and go though menus to do other stuff doesn't seem efficient.

My sugestion would be...  if you left click on a album it would have a drop down box and it would be basically-

Entire album
1. songname
2. songname

Whatever you clicked on would append it to the playlist.
If you RIGHT clicked you get the same dropdown box except it would clear the playlist and add whatever you clicked.

One other thing I'll mention is the ability to bind keys to things..

example...
right-ctrl goes down to the next artist
right-shift goes up an artist

the 4 arrow keys move around the albums picutred

heh then if you had 2 other keys for left/rihgt click (when pressed the arrow keys would move up and downt eh dropmenus)

you could basically controll eveything with 8 keys that coudl be learned pretty fast

IE a wireless keyboard viewing a fullscreen verion of this

Okay sorry for my rambling, this is already 1000x better than anything I've tried, nice work.

I say go for Office XP look.
MJ changes it look with each skin and will change in v9.
When I'm using AV I just want it to look as good as possible.
It's like if I had a crappy car, I wouldn't say: ok - I have to put a crappy stereo in it just so it doesn't outshine the car.

That's just an eg. no offense to MJ which is a porsche :)

The OfficeXP look works for me.  Delighted that you're making progress.

I too would like the XP look.

Can I add an additional suggestion?

I would like to have the option to add an Album View button on the MJ toolbar.  That way I can easily get to Album view and keep the left hand panel closed out altogether.

Thanks

Paul

asdf,

I like your suggestions and I will bare them in mind when I code the menu processing today.

Nila:

LOL ... nice analogy :D :D

Paul:

I can't add a button on the toolbar as MJ 8 doesn't alow me to.

I think what I am going to to is just stick with the MJ/OS skin for a while yet and as I near production look at allowing both (which upon reflection may not be as difficult as I first imagined).

If anyone is interested I found free Office XP GUI source code here:

http://www.beyondata.com

Check it out ... this guy is giving away over 50 MFC controls to make your app look cool.   The problem I have is that AV is an ATL/COM control and as such it's a pain trying to retrofit the code.

Surely you mean a Rolls Royce? Porsches remind me of some other players I could mention - all style, no substance... :)

Mind you, I guess I wouldnt say no to either if I could afford one.
