Why is this sorting issue happening?

Check the field Disc #.

If Disc # is populated, it seems to override the sort order of Track #, even when Disc # is not specified in the sort definition.

If this proves to be the problem, simply delete the contents of Disc #.

Nope, that is not the case. 

I checked, no disc #, went in and cleared that field anyway, no change.  If you sort on filename, which starts with the track # (01 Rain - The Cult) it sorts properly.

deleted the files and re-imported them, no change.

Deleted all of the track #'s and re-entered them.  no change.

Try checking the spelling of Artist. Perhaps the disc 2 Artist has a space appended to it? eg. "The Cult "

Actually, it was the Disc#.  It was blank in Tag & Rename, but apparently that is one of those weird MC library fields.  Killed it in JR and all is fine.

This "albumtype=incomplete" thing has me all wrapped up.  I never realized how many tags I had that were screwed up.  Lots of unproductive work

To avoid what I call "junk tags" causing clutter and/or problems I have created a custom view that I use only when importing and tagging files. I make visible all of the problematic fields which from experience I have learned are sometimes populated with crap. These include: Disc #, Band, Comments, and Lyrics. If these fields contain anything I clear them before importing into my library. If you have old mp3s you should also check the fields Tempo, Mood, Preference, and Situation which were often populated by MusicMatch Jukebox but no one seems to use this player any more so these fields are rarely populated nowadays.
