Lossless format possible on iPod

I wonder if it is possible to convert a wav file on the iPod to the Apple lossless format using iTunes. Has anyone tried this?
Or there any other ways to use that lossless format to save space.

The only option I know is to use Rockbox. But for now I prefer another method.
