Need some help - Playing videos through a WIFI Network
« on: October 10, 2007, 08:22:01 am »

Hi everybody, and please forgive my poor English (Native Spanish)  :-[

I have my old laptop (Dell Inspiron 8000) set as a jukebox with MC 10 on it. I used to play videos stored in an external drive via a Fire Wire connection, and MC performed just fine, with no scratches or jumps. Problems begun when I attached the drive to another laptop and tried to play videos (avi) in my old laptop trough the WIFI connection. The videos start playing well, but at some points (more than desirable) there are jumps :'(. Is there a way to set priority levels on both, the program or the network connection? Can the buffering levels be set? - Some other players I have tried improved its performance fixing those issues, but, You know, they are not the same ;) .

Sometimes playing video streaming over a wireless connection (especially when they are stored on an external drive) is just too much to ask.  Some things you CAN try are to increase the buffering inside MC.  There are a few places to do this, which have different effects.  Read this: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=37109.msg253473#msg253473

The other option is to try to improve the speed/reliability of your network and drive.  First off, the drive may work faster if you tell Windows that it is a fixed disk instead of a removable disk.  This can be dangerous if you save data onto it a lot and disconnect it (you will HAVE TO properly eject the disk before disconnecting it), but you can enable Write Caching (Optimize for Performance): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259716

Thanks for the reply, Glynor. Finally, I made up my mind and bought a new external HD ;D, so the old one is now fully dedicated to feed the jukebox straightly through the Firewire connection with no more playback problems.
