server is not working
« on: October 12, 2007, 09:32:02 pm »

I have not been able to get the server to work:
Have the same (latest) version on both machines
The firewall (Windows LiveOneCare) has port 80 open in both directions on both machines
MC has been added to the list of programs allowed by the firewall on both machines
Neither machine has a web server

From all I read the above is the checklist for trobleshooting the server connection but still the client does not find it by itself or when I tell it to search for libraries.
My network is fine as I can play from either machine MP3s on the other machine.

Any thoughts on what else to try would be appreciated.

Are they on a local network or internet?  Try entering the IP address and then add the port number explicity, ":80" and also try different ports.

I'm sure you tried the auto detect.  Make sure to restart Media Center after a failed attempt to load a library because it will say it failed without retrying.

Under Servers and Devices in the tree on Media Center, is Library Server set correctly and running?

The two machines are in a home network and they see and access each other's shared files fine.
The server is on on the server.  I found the following log on the server side but unfortunately it does not help me.

10/13/07 06:26:09 - JRiver Library Server Version 1.0.37 starting...
10/13/07 06:26:09 - Trying Port 80

I'm not certain, but I don't think Library Server is talking with an MC client machine.  It looks like something else is talking to Library Server.

Try a different port.

When you start the client machine, are you searching for servers?  Or connecting to the specific IP address?  Both should work, but try the second if you haven't.

I opened port 80-89 on both machines but the client, after being restarted, still does not find a server when I go to File/Library/Seach servers. I'm not sure how to connect to a specific IP address.

In the meantime this is what the server log looks like:

10/13/07 07:29:59 - JRiver Library Server Version 1.0.37 starting...
10/13/07 07:29:59 - Trying Port 80
10/13/07 07:29:59 - Starting Auto Detect beacon
10/13/07 07:29:59 - Running on Port 80

It is apparently sitting there waiting to serve but did not record my attempt on the client to access the server.

Add an entry to Library Manager.  Examples are there.

The log says the server started normally and is ready.  You're correct that it doesn't see a client connecting.

You're still running on port 80.  You can change that in the options for LS.

I put the server on port 89;
On the client, through Library manager, I added a library with the same IP address and added ":89" at the end. I believe that is the right syntax.
Howver, it still did not find it.
Back at the server, the log says it is running on port 89.  However, the pattern that it is emerging is that after a few minutes something seems to be trying to access the server.  See the following log since I restarted the program about 3 hours ago. Do any of the labels mean anything in MC?  I have no idea what else could be running that would have a dialog between the two machines.

Try a google search on HNAP.  It's a protocol.  I don't think it's ours.

It's possible that your network is set up so that the requests are being blocked by your router.

You could try a traceroute to the server.  Start/Run/CMD/tracert [ip address]

First, something else is trying to access your machine on port 80 - thats the TEADevInfo stuff.

Second, your client is not actually hitting the server, according to your logs. Look for things like a firewall, NAT, misconfigured port on the client, misconfigured IP address on the client.

I would really suggest not using port 80.  Security by obscurity is great and is easy to get by just using a non-standard port.  Besides, it stops you from running a web server--which I personally have done for years.

The HNAP (Home Network Administration Protocol, http://www.networkmagic.com/hnap.php) is comming from Network Magic, a utility I use for printer and file sharing.  Among the things that it does is give you the topology of the devices you have on your network and so it needs to poke around.  It is a good bet the TEADevInfo/ is coming from them too but I have not heard from them yet.

The network magic traffic shouldn't mess up your library server communication, it'll just dump messages to the log as you've seen. Something else is going on.

Try the steps in the wiki:

benn - security by obscurity is not great.

I'm relying on your security!  The only option I have is obscurity (other than SSL tunneling).  It's great in that it's an easy way to really help.  I don't think I ever get random IP addresses trying to connect.

I'd suggest a firewall. -- j

I have one.  But I have to open the port used by MC in the firewall or it won't work.

Honestly, I'm not worried.  I use Smoothwall and do believe I can only allow traffic incoming on certain ports.  But it's not a big deal.  Yes, I only use library server from one static IP address but then when I go on vacation or leave, then I'm required to login to my computer and adjust my firewall.  I haven't had any problems yet so it's not worth the extra hassle.
