I want to write some data and have it stored as part of the metadata so that I can rebuild my library with just my MP3s if needed.  I know that some programs may not be written to see the field, which is fine, but as long as I can write/read it in MC, I'm fine.  I know that MC has the ability to "Add A Field", but I'm not sure if that is an MC-only thing or if it gets written to the actual file.  Is there such a think as a bit field?  If not, I can use a string.

Yes, you can create custom tags within MC and they will be saved within the MP3 files if you selected "Save to file" for that custom tag. And yes, only MC will be able to read it.

Not sure what you mean by a "bit field"? Do you mean a binary field as in 0 or 1? If so, I don't think so, but you can create a field with values of Y or N quite easily.
