Quick and simple query. If I purchase v8 now will I be eligible to upgrade to v9 for free or will I be required to purchase a new license?

I'm in favor of reasonable (read: discounted) upgrade fees.  When you register one particular version, you immediately get what you paid for.  You can't complain about upgrade fees (though I certainly wouldn't refuse a free upgrade...).

Hi - I bought v.6 and also purchase v.8 and wouldn't mind paying for v.9  but I would prefer (it's my money after all) some kind of upgrade discount although $'s involved are not large (for me).

However IMHO, if the policy is that there is a fee for each new version then the previous version should still be available, with it's associated plug-ins, for download for some time after the newer version is gold. Of course, once the new version goes gold then there are no new fixes etc. - i.e. a new version of some third-party plug-in would necessitate an upgrade to the latest version.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I think a reasonable upgrade fee makes sense. Markets for products like this are finite. You can't offset the cost of supporting your established users for free with the cash flow from new users. So, we've got to be prepared to pay for a substantially new product.

The most any of us can rationally expect is one free upgrade, which is what we've gotten so far. The downside for that is having to pay the full boat for the next following version. I'd rather pay an upgrade fee as an established user from Day 1 and pass on the one free upgrade.

And if we don't think the new version offers anything much, we can pass on it and stick with the previous version - so long as JRiver gives us reasonable access to the prior version and its plug-ins, as Gatobrit points out.

Maybe... unless the cost to upgrade to v.9 plus the upgrade to v.10 is higher than the cost of v.10. In that case, I would prefer the current pattern of Full Price, upgrade free, Full Price, upgrade free... etc.

J River keep doing whatever you think is necessary for survival. I'm still not a self made millionaire, but whatever you charge for the next version will be fine with me.

We should all be willing to pay something for an upgrade, but I have been away for awhile with the birth of a new son.....is there a v9.0 on the way???

PS - Great product, but I am having problems with XP which I will post on another thread.
