Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 or Apple Ipod?
« on: August 14, 2002, 04:30:24 pm »

I am going to buy a new MP3 player.  I cannot decide between the Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 or the Apple Ipod (10 GB version with remote).  Any feedback appreciated.

Best regards,

I have read nothing but good things about both models.  I am a veteran of the original Nomad Jukebox. I suffered through unacceptable battery life, software and firmware that was at times unuseably bad, and impotent customer service.

Despite the good things about the Jukebox 3, I refuse to throw good money after bad.  I've placed an order for the PC Ipod - can't wait to see it!

Øyvind,

It completely depends on what you want the mp3 player for. I had an old Nomad II & currently use a 5gb Ipod (which, as you might be able to tell from my incessant posting to this forum, was released far before apple announced they were going to make a PC formatted ipod).
In both cases, I wanted portable music. I use my player as something small that I can slip into a pocket or clip onto my belt when I am traveling, exercising, etc. The IPod is incredibly small, and it is impossible to get through even 5 gb of music with any ‘normal traveling’ – with recording rates b/t 128 and 320, you’re still looking at 70|PLS| hours of music. The battery life has never lasted less than 9 or 10 hours, and both the ipod and its AC adaptor are extremely portable.

This being said, I am not sure what the functions of the PC ipod will be. I’ve had a bit of difficulty with my ipod (though the latest iteration of ephpod (free ipod organizational software) is substantially improved).

When I want to record music, I use my computer’s line in…

If you want to record on the go, however (and I have certainly felt the urge at concerts, etc.), the Ipod doesn’t have the capability. And the DSP settings of the nomad sound quite impressive.

Both are at the top of the pack for their respective uses – The Ipod is for people on the go who need something small and portable with great battery life, the Nomad is for audiophiles who want a mini digital recording studio in their (large) jacket pocket. Figure out what you want to do with your mp3 player and then purchase the one that fits your lifestyle.

Cheers,
Ted

I believe it comes down to these key differences:

IPOD:
Smaller
More expensive
Max 20gig HD
No recording
SDMI compliant, so no transferring of files from IPod to other computers
Firewire only
10 hours max playback time on one charge
.MP3, .AIFF, .WAV, Audible 4 (Mac only) formats supported
Calendar and Contacts database
Can be used as a external HD (Mac only)
Wired remote

JB3:
Larger
Cheaper
Max HD is whatever is avail in 2.5"/9.5mm HD (currently 60gig)
Records in .WAV and .MP3 formats
Not SDMI compliant, so you can share files with friends or other computers
Firewire and USB 1.1
22 hours max playback time on one charge w/2 batteries installed
.MP3, .WAV, .WMA supported
No Calendar or Contacts database
Wireless and wired remotes

Most PC users that go for the IPod cite size as the most important reason for choosing it.

Sirs,

Thank you very much for your feedback.  I have decided to get the Apple Ipod (10 Gb version).  I ordered it today.  However, it will take aprox. 5 weeks before I get it... (Steve Jobs wants to take of Apple user first he said...)

Best regards,
