Newbie needs a little organization help
« on: August 14, 2002, 11:45:28 am »

I probably am not doing the following most effiently.

Set up playlists by artist, then CD as subfolder.

Problem is that a couple of times I have changed the renamed the songs in Windows. For example, I have a policy of always putting the track number as a prefix to the file name in Windows to help with sorting and burning as a data file for MP3 purposes.

When I have changed the names, MJ doesn't find them anymore. What I have been doing is finding them in the media library, playlists, etc then deleting references to them in MJ.

Then I re-import the files and re-file them in MJ.

Is there an automated way to do this, where I can tell MJ that the windows file names have changed, but are in the same order and have it automatically changed in MJ ? OR can I do t he renaming in MJ and maybe it will take care of both situations.

Thanks,

Jolo - Jon

Select the track in MJ and open its Properties dialog.

From there you can change the file name directly and it will automatically change the file name on disk.  Or change the other properties such as artist, album, track name, etc. then use the Tools/Rename File From Properties feature.

Jolo - take a look at Settings / Options and scroll down to File Name & Locations. This lets you set your default directory structure and the default file name you want to use. (For example, I organize my songs by artist / album and the song name has the track # and title. So...

e:\music\Pink Floyd\Dark Side of the Moon\01 - Speak to Me

When you've imported all your songs into MJ select the songs you want to move / rename, hit Properties and then do as RemyJ advises with the rename. MJ will take care of the rest.

Once you've done this you never have to delete, rename or move a file in Windows again - MJ does it for you.
