tricky library/database challenge,expert advice welcomed
« on: August 12, 2002, 07:05:19 am »

This is the scenario:

A large portion of my mpc files was on a hd, that I accidently
formated during a XP reinstall.

So I lost all these files, and am in the process of reripping all of those files.

The challenge is this:
I have filled out year, comment, custom 1,2 & 3 fields for all of the songs.
All of this info is still there in the MJ library - only the actual
file is not there any more.

If I just put in the cd and rip, in many cases MJ produces duplicates of the existing songs in the library, only without of course all of the database field info that I need.

So then I wind up with 2 sets of the songs from the cd, the actual ones without the db-info.

What can I do to transfer or in some other way make the MJ database believe the new file equals the old file?

When reripping I check in proberties what naming scheme has been used and duplicate this. However, if a song in the database has something written in the comment fields, the new rip will be a duplicate...

Hope I made myself clear.

I thought that there must be a simple way to do this.

Jesper.

Jesper - can you rip with some other program - EAC or something - into the same directory structure?

Alternatively, re-rip with MJ onto a different drive. Then delete the new entries in the MJ library (using the File Location media library view) and manually move the files using Explorer into the "old" location.

John,

thank you so much for that suggestion.

Reminds me of a good sound principle that simplicity is truth.

Jesper - if only I could remember that principle more often! Good luck!

How about this...

Create a new "junk" database in MJ and rip into it with the files going exactly where the original database thinks they should be.  Close the "junk" database and open your original one and do combination of import and update.  Not sure exactly what combination would work but playing with a few tracks might help.

Alternatively, back up your database, rip, then restore the database.

thanks guys.

Tried out the first suggestion from Gatobrit and it works.

I just rerip to another drive, while securing everything is named exactly as the original. Funny how just the simplest space or underscore can make a huge difference

Then I delete the new ones in the db, and move the actual files over.

I then do a manual check to see if it actually is a match, and on to the next rip.

I am very grateful for all your help.
