Burning Problem
« on: December 03, 2007, 09:15:32 pm »

When I burn a CD, 2 of about 4 CDs I've burnt in the past 2 weeks have not came out.  They are simply static/fuzz.  The first problematic disc never went past saying writing lead in and the second I'm not sure what it said but when I returned, it showed an error.  The first problem disc occurred with two instances of MC open simultaneously.

Post your system info, exact burning settings and the resulting error message.

Try to find out if you can reliably reproduce the problem by doing certain things in a certain order.

You can use a rewritable disc for avoiding coasters. MC has also a test burning mode, which may be useful. The test mode goes through all steps, but it doesn't activate the laser so the disc stays intact.

I just ran a test burn, as you suggested.  It completed successfully.  So I tried burning again (except not test mode) and it failed.  It just says: "Writing lead-in with CD-Text" and just stays there, not moving.  The burner is burning stuff, though, because the longer I wait, the more of the disc is colored.  If I play it, it's just static.

I have a whole pile of CD-RWs but they are older.  This is really the first time I've actually been making repeat coasters--about 4 or 5 so far.  Ehh, we have around a thousand CDs/DVDs on hand.

Addition:
1. Test succeeded.
2. Burn failed
3. Again, test (changing no other settings) succeeded!!!

Drive problem?

--- I guess there isn't really an error message.  It just keeps burning "junk."  I suppose if I let it finish it would give an error.  I should dig out some CD-RWs.  But they are so slow!  4x I think!  I've thought about getting some new, fast ones.

It sounds like a drive problem - maybe the laser is dying. Try burning the same stuff with different software.

You could absolutely be right.  This will be the first issue with a drive practically.  But it's understandable considering the drive has probably ripped 800 CDs, 2,000 DVDs, and burnt 500 discs.  Not to mention reading tons of data CDs/DVDs.
